Cicada dammage year 2

Looking around at my trees this year and its apparent that the cicadas we had last year did a number on many of the small trees......most of them had the telltale splitting bark last summer from the cicadas but over winter is when it hit home. Most trees have at least 12" or so of loss at the top with some even more. I imagine the damage was just enough to weaken them and cause dieback.

Anyone else seeing this?
