Attractant for Camera survey

I would recommend against establishing a mineral site. The increased face to face contact increases disease spread. Once a mineral lick is established, it continues for many years.

Instead, I would recommend a temporary food attractant of some type that can be removed when the camera survey is done. MSU has established a protocol for doing camera surveys with attractants. They give you an estimate of the camera density to capture a high percentage of deer.

I think the best thing I ever used to get deer on camera was a plastic jar of peanut butter. Screw top top of the jar to a tree and cut the bottom off with a knife. That makes them stand there trying to lick it out of the jar. Also had a picture with 7 raccoons also going after the peanut butter. Dumped out a pail of apples right underneath the peanut butter and nothing touched the apples until the peanut butter was gone. Also did a home mix of mineral salts and added molasses. The molasses brought in bears so I only did that mix one time. jmo
