Ammo Storage on the Hunt

I was just wondering what you guys use to hold your ammo while on the hunt, im a leftie so genraly the stock sleave wouldnt work for me cause the cases will be on my chin and it will just irritate me and my dad has one that his rounds fall out of, what do you all think about using a bullet wallet?

I have 3 in mag and carry 2,one for the barrel and a spare.if you are talking about taking a stand on a normal hunt and not a out of state packin hunt

I carry 5 rounds extra on top of my magazine in a wallet style cartridge holder that I keep in my bag. but you could just as easily carry an entire box if you keep a bag with you.

When I'm deer hunting I use a butt cuff, but that holds my empties until I get back to the truck. In my backpack I carry a ten round ammo wallet plus four in my magazine. In hog country, you have to be prepared.:) When I'm strictly hog hunting, the ten round mag in my 6.8 and another in my pack.

When I was a teenager and more than once shot myself out of ammo I found a stock sleeve very handy for deer hunting. Now I just load my rifle and make my first shots count. For varmints I just take full boxes in my pack. A note on stock sleeves, once the elastic gets several years old and they get stretched you will loose ammo, get a new one every several years ($4.74 on Amazon), make a hole in the back bottom of the sleeve for the rifle sling stud, that keeps the sleeve from sliding around. I'm not sure what difference right or left handed makes for a stock sleeve ammo carrier?
I do like the idea of a leather ammo wallet, does anyone have one they recommend?

Hunting my own land I take a ten round ammo wallet along with me. It is full of ammo and I keep it in my pocket or backpack.

My dad just got a new one, DO NOT get the redhead brand, you pretty much have to disassemble the gun cause we could not figure it out

I don't know what brand mine is, but it velcros on and has a small zippered pouch on it where I keep several optical cleaning wipes. Very handy !

Check out www.godagrip.com. They make a couple different ammo pouches that you can take on and off or switch sides of the rifle stock. Just order the ammo pouch and some extra hook and loop backing and you can put it on any gun you want.

I simply run a full load of ammo in the gun and keep spares in a handy pocket (My hunting coat has a chest pocket that works great). I figure when hunting with a center-fire cartridge of any sort.....I shouldn't need more than a shot or two. Now I have needed more in the past. But If I have to empty the gun.....well to be honest.....I just wasn't thinking. A single shot situation would be different. I saw a guy who used a butt cuff type shell holder but he had it modified to where he could wear it on his fore-arm of the "weak" hand (sort of like an arm guard for bow hunters)...... where there is a will there is a way.

I just have a cheap velcro type which is ambidexterous. Have had it for years. Place either side of stock.. I don't have it for the extra shells but just maybe I have a knack for throwing gun in car to hunt and forgetting to throw in the box of cartridges!! Not that I have ever done that.

You may not be the only one who has forgotten his cartridges........or his quiver......or release........

I'm not saying I know anyone who's done that, I'm just saying. ;)

I even knew a guy that let his buddy out (in the dark) at a tripod with no seat, but that's another story altogether.......

I usually load 3-4 rounds in my rifle and maybe one or two in my pocket in case things really go wrong. I pretty much stand hunt anymore and I don't do running shots anymore. Very rarely I need the second shot, haven't needed a third since I started hunting this way. Just what I do these days, not saying it fits anyone else. I bought a leather ammo wallet and keep it in my pack for the season and usually have my extra rounds in it inside my pack. Murray C-3 7 round holder. Not cheap but I have a little disposable income at this point in my life and I like it. It allows me to keep track of my ammo throughout a season. He makes quality leather products, I have several of his slings.

Not to get this too far off subject, but just last week I forgot my boots. Ended up hunting in socks with some open toe slides. Hardest part was using my climber with nothing on the top of my foot as padding against the foot stirrups.
