ACCF seed collecting?

Is anyone going to be able to make it out this year? The dates they have open, I’m not free on to collect this time.

They have selected dates to collect seeds from their trees in September/October. Whomever goes and collects the seeds can distribute to other ACCF members to grow.

From the 2017 newsletter for an example

"Open harvest days will be September 12, 16, 19 & 26 and October 3, 7 & 9. We shall accept no more than five volunteers on each of the first two dates, because we have just a small number of chestnuts that crack burs and drop nuts early. If you choose Sept. 12 or 16 send early notice allaccf@gmail.com, to be sure to get your desired date.

I shall verify your date choice via e-mail and everyone who plans to participate will receive a sheet of directions to the Airport and the Big Field on Mt. Lake, along with what to wear and complete chestnut processing information. We start at 9 a.m. at the Airport, then move on to Mt Lake."

I haven't heard what their seed set is like this year but hopefully it is good. I planted a bunch this year and last but conditions may have cut germination rates. My 4 year old ones are still kicking despite pressure from deer, winters, etc. They struggle but don't die like most other trees I have planted.

I checked this one 2 weeks ago and it is doing well. The leader forked. The terminal bud must of been winter killed. What I pruned at the base was 10 cm long because I couldn't get under the snow. Hopefully, leader growth will recover. At least, the deer didn't strip the leaves off the top foot of the leader like they did the others.

I have a date to head out and collect on the 28th. I’m hoping the elk hunt works out so I’m back in time to drive across the country the other way to collect the chestnuts.

My Fall planted ACCF ones did real well. 80% in some cases but strangely a spot I thought would do real well tanked. I stilll can't figure why.

Late May spring planted ones did about 50 % after abuse in the fridge all winter. Some may have dried out.

I planted 15-20 Wed. They were sent gratis which was nice. They had a poor crop in VA this year due to drought. Half of what I got were "floaters" but they looked pretty good to me. Next year will tell.
