.22lr Rifles

Hello everyone.

I’m looking to buy a .22 LR rifle mainly for relaxation and occasional practice shooting at targets (and maybe, at some point, I’ll get more serious about it). I’d be shooting at distances of around 35 meters, up to a maximum of about 100 meters.

I’ve been a licensed hunter for three years, but I don’t really have much experience with .22 LR rifles, so I hope I won’t be asking any stupid questions.

Based on what I’ve read so far and on other people’s experiences, I’m currently leaning toward buying a CZ 457. Could someone please explain the differences between the various models and designations (Synthetic, Royal, Ergo, MDT, Varmint, etc.)?

What scope would you recommend for this kind of use?

I would mostly be shooting on my own property, in the woods behind my house, where it generally wouldn’t disturb anyone. Still, just to be considerate toward the nearest neighbor, I’m thinking about adding a suppressor. Is a suppressor even necessary if I’m shooting subsonic ammunition?

And maybe one last (possibly silly) question: if you shoot a .22 LR a lot, can that negatively affect your shooting with larger-caliber rifles where recoil is involved? I’ve read something along those lines somewhere 😄

I am guessing you aren't from US.There are alot of brands and models of 22s. If you want semi auto,I like the Ruger 10-22,lever action, theres Rossi, marlin and a couple others, theres also pump and bolt action. If you want a scope you can go as high as you want.I just put a rimfire scope 3x9 on my Ruger 10-22.We mostly carry in farm truck for armadillos and other critters. I know some guys that put supressors on them and they say you can hardly hear them.

I bought a CZ457 Varmint in the last year. It's a tack driver. The various models generally differ with variations in the barrel (length, standard vs heavy, threaded, iron sights) and stock. I preferred the 16" heavy barrel, threaded for suppressor.

I had an extra Vortex 3-12x scope laying around, and put that on it. More than typical for 22, but does a good job.

I also own a Banish 22 supressor. I didn't notice as great of difference with the Suppressed rifle as I did with a 22 handgun. Suppressor may have needed cleaning. The longer rifle barrel results in higher velocity bullet, so handgun may naturally be quieter due to less powder burn with bullet in the barrel. Slower bullet may be below sound barrier from the handgun. It's truly a 007 volume...

Practicing with .22 rifles will improve your shooting skills with bigger rifles, not negatively affect things. Learning good practices like target acquisition, breathing control and trigger squeezing will help your general shooting skills going forward.

My two cents, a CZ would be hard to beat in a nice, accurate bolt gun. For a fun gun, a Ruger 10-22 or a Henry lever gun would be my choice. A nice , medium range priced 3x9 or 2.5x10 would make a good scope for either.

We have 2 Rossi RS22's. It's a youth gun but holy cow they are great. Almost never jam like our 10/22's do. Cheap and reliable. For the price you can chop up the stock and lengthen it all you want without feeling bad.

I've got a CZ. One of my favorite guns. Also like the Marlin Model 60 and Model 39A a lot.
