    Building Organic Matter

Agreed…lots of greatly appreciated info! The BW planted early July and did great. I ran into a tractor issue and couldn’t use my cultipacker to crimp or knock it down when I broadcast the WR in late August. It was an absolute flop (pretty disappointing although I didn’t get to put lime down for...

    Building Organic Matter

Thanks so much for the detailed posts guys! Given the low germination rate I expect, should I seed the legume and WR not at the normal standalone rate or go light? I suppose I could always go back with more WR and broadcast with a bag spreader if the legume doesn’t come up at all but I’d rather...

    Building Organic Matter

A few things I’m considering after some more reading that I’m curious what you all think and if it makes sense to disc (lightly) and cultipack: 1. Soil is very sandy - is it better to disc 1-1.5” to get the seed covered for better moisture? 2. There are lots of dips and low spots from where...

    Building Organic Matter

Question for some of you experienced folks. I have two plots that were just cleared as part of a logging operation. Both are about 1 acre of useable planting area that I plan to keep expanding. Soil is sandy. One is dry, the other is pretty moist although I think it’ll keep drying up over time...

    Blue Seal Regular Oats?

Thanks for the info. I have a disc and cultipacker so hopefully that’ll do the trick.

    Blue Seal Regular Oats?

Thanks yoder. How would you handle it if you had standing buckwheat and then wanted to do WR or WW in the fall?

    Blue Seal Regular Oats?

My hope is I’ll be able to disc it in and plant again early September. Fingers crossed…

    Blue Seal Regular Oats?

Funny you mention the winter rye. I ended up putting some of that in on Friday because he had it cheap. Farmer buddy of mine swears it’s not too late and there was rain in the forecast Saturday and Sunday so I gave it a shot. I’ll be very curious to see if anything is happening at the end of the...

    Blue Seal Regular Oats?

Soil samples were upper 4’s for pH but I’ve had good success on smaller WHI oats plots with no lime or fertilizer. It’s sandy with very little top soil and no ability to get any back to them. Definitely a work in progress!

    Blue Seal Regular Oats?

I like the look of that! Any idea how it would do in acidic soil? I’m not too familiar with most of the species in it. Just curious how your soil is since they seem to like what you’ve got going on.

Thanks! Didn’t realize the difference but now it makes sense.

    Blue Seal Regular Oats?

Thanks creek. Got the soil test and did about 1900 lbs pelletized lime per acre. I’ll do some fertilizer around planting time and more lime before planting. The soil will be a process. Hoping to have something in the ground at all times so I can keep discing it in and building organic matter...

    Blue Seal Regular Oats?

Does anyone have experience with Blue Seal regular oats? Local place stocks them but the owner doesn’t know much about food plots. I’m not sure if it matters which brand but my soil is pretty acidic and lacking nutrients (brand new plot, planting for first time). Thanks!
