Question for the Soil Guys Here

I’d plant buckwheat. It’s a soil builder and deer and turkey love it. After it goes to seed you can lightly disc, or mow it and get a second crop. It will die after frost. Our forefathers used it as a weed control and it was a source of protein for them. Search the internet and read up on it. It...

    Direct Seeding Chestnuts....Sort of...

I’ve never used the tubes they seem like they would make the trees top heavy and lanky. I have a great supply of milk crates and cages. Seems like I’m always moving them around as trees grow and I plant other stuff. It is work that I enjoy doing.

    Allegheny Chinquapin

Hadn’t had an issue with deer browsing on my AC until this year. Got behind with a kidney stone and had not made it back to the farm to put up cages around 2 of my trees/bushes and the deer had ate almost everything. Any hope they’ll put out more catkins???

    Direct Seeding Chestnuts....Sort of...

I’m not claiming to know but from what I’ve read the AC doesn’t need stratification and should be planted as soon as it’s harvested. I just started 2 last fall, 1st time mine have produced. I overwintered the pots in my shed when the temperature was below 30 degrees. I was also told it’s best to...

I believe I figured out what was happening to the burs falling off, squirrels. Oh well, I harvested 2 nuts and hopefully they sprout soon.

    Allegheny Chinquapin

I would but went from a loaded tree to not very many. This is this trees 5th growing season. I have been waiting for the other 2 to catch up and produce catkins for cross pollination. My 1st purchase seem like early bloomers, and my second purchase seems like late bloomers. I have 5 more in pots...

    Allegheny Chinquapin

I went back Monday to see if anymore burs had opened up and found 1 more. After looking back at pictures I had a lot of burs come off through the season. Not sure why, storms, squirrels??

    Ozark Chinquapin

Trees are looking good. All of my sprouting nuts got eaten. I had 1/4 hardware mesh around them but no top on it. I need to pay my dues and try again. I have not checked on my 2 survivors since spring this will be their 2nd growing season. My AC dropped some burs this summer also, at the time I...
