I sound just like a real Turkey

As you probably already know, owls will pick off poults on the limb at night one by one. Then hawks, and eagles pick them off in the day. I kept track of an entire hatch over a month that were eaten by hawks. This was on a power line. The turkeys became sitting ducks.

I sound just like a real Turkey

I worry about owls. I Have had a few close calls with talons in the early dim light. No contact though but, too close for comfort. Believe it or not we’re not allowed to shoot coyotes during turkey season around these parts. And the Attorney General may get involved to prosecute if...

    Bedding Pockets

I have found that deer would prefer to bed where they usually bed now. . I find it hard to create totally new areas as they tend to keep to the familiar ones so, what I do is go in and enhance those areas that they already bed in. Make them bigger with some open areas in them so they can...

    Bedding Pockets

A common problem for many. Some questions first to get a better idea of what we’re talking about. How many acres do you have? Is it all timber or is there some fields, brush, swamps etc. Flat or hilly, mountainous?

    LC's Mixes

The white perennial clover goes around the perimeter. Plant the rest of the plot in blocks or strips. Half of those with the brassica mix and half with the cereal combo.( annual clover and radish). He believed in the strip/block method to keep the deer moving through the plot. If you...

    TSI after bud break?

In my experience it doesnt matter when you girdle. Remember to double or triple girdle to be most effective. I found that most girdled trees will tip over in a few years so i reserve girdling for only a few of the biggest trees that are either dangerous to fell or that will just take out...

Stone Branch, build it, they will come.

Just curious. With all those hills and terrain features, How are your property lines marked So you know where your at?

Yep, red maples usually grow nice and straight and make good saw logs. They are usually part of any timber harvest where they reside. They just have a lower value than good hardwood trees. If you’re leaving the canopy on in that area it’s a moot point regardless. Carry on.

    Coastal blacktail hunt

Very nice. It’s on many people’s bucket list. I’ve hunted in Cal many times down at the Tejon No black tail down there though.

Nice looking trees although I’ve never seen red maple worth much on the stump. I suppose it depends on how many you have. I ran into mostly red maple on my cutting and I never let one get in the way of improving habitat. Hard maple on the other hand was worth good money. Are you...
