"Whitetail Hollow" - 90 Acres NE Oklahoma.

I guess I decided to do a test run on our life insurance policy yesterday while brushhogging roads at our deer lease...

I was moving right along and every once in awhile I would notice a dead tree hanging out over the road so I would nudge them a little with my FEL and push them over...

I came upon 2 big elms right next to each other that were dead so I nudge 1 and it fell perfectly so I put my bucket up as high as I could and start d to gently nudge the other when I noticed the tree jerk violently and I knew immediately what was happening so I got ready for the impact as best as I could :(

The top 1/2 of the dead elm broke and fell taking a big live mulberry top with it and all of it fell on the tractor...the only thing that saved me was that roof because had I not had that the big log would have crushed me down like it did the roof...

I was stranded at that point and had to walk 3 miles to my truck in anarea with no cell service. Luckily I had a chainsaw in my truck or I would have been unable to retrieve my tractor...

Be careful out there with your equipment...

Glad you're OK. Equipment accidents happen all to frequently, even when we think we are paying attention.

After the tractor fiasco was cleared up my wife showed up at the lease with 2 of our grandsons. Eli came to shoot his deer rifle while little brother provided support...lol

Was that your cornbread plate? Exact same targets I use. Paper plates with stick on dots! Pretty good shootin!

When we were at our deer lease Saturday another lease member and good friend of mine was there before we got there and it seems our guys who plant plots had decided not to plant one of the plots that they had already tilled. My friend decided to plant it himself using his 4 wheeler and a bed spring. I asked him what he planted and he said he planted rye grass...luckily only about 10 pounds...

I educated him on rye grass and told him maybe we could salvage the plot so I met him down there yesterday evening with Rye Grain, Winter Wheat and some PTT and Daikon Radish I had left over. I spread it with me spreader and he dragged it in. The dirt in this plot is beautiful and very few rocks...

Glad you are alright from the tree. I cleared pipeline right of way in my youth. So cut a ton of trees and moved a lot of brush with small tractors, as well as mowed right of way after clearing. I have seen many incidents as the one you had, the difference was we had complete roll cages on our tractors but still saw guys get major injuries. You were definitely blessed on that day. I had a pretty good sized tree dropped on my back about 20 years ago and didn't realize how bad it was screwed up until the past 5 years. Be careful around those widow makers, they get their name for a reason. Hope you see some good rain soon.

I am looking into perhaps making some front down bars for the top that would provide more protection and greatly strengthen the top...same design as backhoes use. Respect for tree well established...Thanks

Thank you. I was paying very close attention and as soon as that tree shuddered with very light pressure I knew what was coming :(

Those were some targets my buddy rigged up for Eli and put up so they may have had something on them before ;) Eli shot about 15 shots and all of them were similar to those 2 but those are the only 2 my wife got pics of. He is a really good shot and has great trigger control. He never jerks it or flinches...
A little late reading this, but glad your ok after the tree incident. That's scary.

Thank you Mark. It was one of those "so this is how it ends" moments for me :(

glad you are ok,another reason to keep those rollover bars up also.It can be dangerous out there for sure.Everything from bugs to trees to equipment. Dang ticks got me again, tested positive for rocky mountain spotted fever this week, again.

Again you say? I had that when I was 14 yrs old for the first and last time. It's really bad stuff! I couldn't sweat for years after I got it and since I did a lot of construction I carried jugs of water around to pour over me. I think a beneficial side effect is I very, very, rarely ever have a tick try to bite me anymore. Probably haven't had 10 ticks stick on me since then and I am constantly in the woods. I rarely ever spray anything on myself to repel ticks...

I hope you get well soon. That ailment by itself is horrid enough without having to go through it during deer season :(

yes i have tested positive for lyme and RMSF before along with 1 daughter and wife.We have terrible ticks.i am just going to have to start spraying more.I bet I pulled 50 off this year.

That is certainly a lot of ticks with apparently a bunch of bad tick bites in your area? To what do you attribute the overabundance of ticks on?

Went by home 10 yesterday and it was pretty depressing... Plots planted 8/21 with less than 1/2" of rain since that time with temps in the 90's gives you this...

That's pretty bleak looking Okie. Do you have a stand by your pond? Looks like you have lots of traffic there...
We had trees looking very similar to yours a couple of yrs ago. It was at the end of a 4-5yr stretch of really dry and hot weather. More pulled through than I thought would. Hopefully that is the case with yours.

I don't have any stands real near the pond but can shoot from the deck of the house to it with rifle. Don't really need a stand there because with as little food as there is with this drought a single slinging corn feeder puts every deer that uses the property right in front of you in the open and in daylight every single time it go's off...not many mature bucks in this area but we do get a few that pass through during the rut. So far have only got a picture of a 2.5 yr old 8 pointer and lots of does and fawns...

This is heartbreaking, because I know how hard you have worked over the last 20 years to improve our land!

Here is the drought monitor for Oklahoma - the Black smudge area is where these photo's were taken. Our N80 (Whitetail Hollow) is North of that in the same county in the tan area and our Deer lease is south of that in the same county in the tan...Drought Monitor.png

weird year---usually the drought status is in the western part of the state and they have had good rain. I'm in the yellow. It is very dry out at my place. I put in a couple of t-posts yesterday for a shooting target and it took everything I had just to get them down 12"--of course that was also due to a bum shoulder.

More chances next week--lets keep praying.

You ain't kidding it's dry! They are saying we have a small chance maybe next Wednesday...Not a good year for plots here in our area for sure... :(

My dad used to joke that the weather men showed increased chances to keep everyone positive. But after a period of time that seemed to compound the depression... It'll rain. Hopefully sooner than later...

Bummer about the red oak. Hopefully it set good buds and will be fine next year. We don't have many left and the ones that are left look terrible.

Glad you are OK after the tractor/tree encounter! Farm equipment, boats and airplanes will try to kill you when you least expect it! We have inherited your drought, I have had about an inch or so right after I planted four weeks ago. Just enough for some germination. Now it is a dust bowl. The turkeys and crows are enjoying the seeds:eek:
