I've never gotten too bothered with so-called "celebrities" whether they're actors, athletes or hunting show hosts. It's all simple entertainment to me, they're just people with a job like everyone else. A buddy of mine was asking if I heard about Lee what's his name the other day. I guess he's a fan because he was defending the guy. Not sure why because it was obvious I could care less. Must be that circling the wagon thing you mentioned G. I don't care enough to look into it but knowing as much about your character and thought process as one could from years together on an internet forum, I'd be willing to bet you called it like it is...like you always do.

We made it back down to the Texas Hole on Saturday. It was 0 degrees when we left and both Dan and I were skunked again. I hooked one nice bow but it released itself so I'm still looking for my first trout caught on fly.





We awoke today to a foot of fresh powder.



I also awoke sub 200lbs on the scale.

Weasel, I really feel the same, I could care less about poacher celebrities. My beef has always been the way Iowa encourages and coddles poachers while the big buck resourse continues to go down hill fast. I did look at chit chat on the forums. Then a copy of the ticket stating unlawful transport (purchased tag after harvest) surfaced.



Some said it's a fake, it's not a fake. Many said oh this isn't an honest mistake, this is poaching and the forums immediately were locked. Funny thing is the poacher in Farmington who received the same ticket and had his gun and deer head confiscated last year, since Lee's ticket was issued, had his gun and deer head returned to him. It would seem that nobody in the hunting industry or the IDNR wants to call poaching a deer without a license, poaching. Actually one person in the IDNR, Dale Garner the head of the IDNR called it poaching. He said that he was going to have a conversation with Mark his head law enforcement man and get back to us but he never did get back to us.

Meanwhile some folks are worked up about this, one such person and one such letter circulated through out the IDNR and Lee's sponsors.

Every state and province that I have either personally hunted or know
the game laws from, have specifically stated that a hunting license
has to be purchased before entering the field and that license/tag has
to be on the person while in the field. According to all states and
provinces, any thing different would be considered poaching if an
animal is taken.

I'll admit, I'm not familiar with the Iowa game laws, I'll assume
there is a "Lee's Law" that allows a celebrity to hunt until they
shoot a deer then purchase the appropriate license after the fact?
Would I, or any other hunter be able to do this without receiving a
poaching citation? I'm sure not! The average sportsman would have had
the law book thrown at them, lost their firearm, hunting privileges,
paid a heavy fine, and been charged with poaching!

Maybe Iowa has a two tiered judicial system where celebrities are not
held to the same standards as regular every day hunters are? I'm sorry
for the sarcastic under tone, it wasn't my intention in the least. But
the more I think of this the more absurd it actually becomes and the
higher my frustration level rises.

Letting Lee Lakosky off without a poaching violation is a slap in the
face and complete insult to every law abiding hunter in the country!

There is still time for you to get this situation corrected and hand
out the proper violation, which is no less than a poaching charge!

The law abiding sportsman and women of North America are not only
watching, but we are expecting Iowa to correct this situation and
bring the same charges that would have been levied on the rest of us.

We feel very strongly that Iowa has damaged its reputation and
completely embarrassed its wildlife law department because of this.

Please do the right thing and either change the law so we can all do
what Lee Lakosky has done, or correct this situation and bring the
same violations the rest of us would have received.

I said along that nothing will be done, the IDNR and the hunting industry knows how their bread is buttered.

Lee had his camera man with him so those interested in their show will probably get to watch a deer being poached on tv.

It is now known as "Lee's Law". Mark Sedlmayr head law enforcement officer of the IDNR responded in a letter, he explained that the ticket that Lee received was for poaching and it is a misdemeanor in Iowa and a $100 fine. He said that Lee received the same treatment that anyone else would. To that we say BS because we know of other poachers that were caught and had to pay thousands in civil restitution fees. Lee was scheduled to appear at the Minnesota deer show this week but he canceled.

It amazes me, the control one set of knockers has over the State of Iowa.

Geo, I saw the snowpack in Sieras was over 20 feet. Wonder what your mountain numbers are? Of course since the one year didn't make it out to ski. Snowing here today but been a pretty mild winter so far. Skiing usually ends early April here. I think some places in West will ski till June this year. I still haven't heard anything from Lee's wife as to my offer for comfort in these hard times.
I'm hitting some of your AO at the farm today that you love so well. Would rather wait for green up but now I have the time.

I'm glad that you found us TT, welcome aboard. My immediate plans are to learn some Brazilian Jui-Jitsu technique, catch a trout on a fly, and pick up a shed. I'm thinking about heading down to New Mexico this am to check on conditions and maybe hike some south facing slopes and ridge lines on Carson National forest land next to the Apaches.

I put a throw and grow patch in the back yard and will probably double it this year with a patch in the side yard.

dogghr, 385 inches year to date with a 2' powder dump on Monday/Tuesday. Wednesday would have been the day but I missed it. 139 " base on top.

It may or may not be a good time to console Tif as she is about to drop another one in a month.

My first shed hunt. My buddy Dan told me not to go in there till the road has time to dry out and it was greasy and about as deep as my ride could go. But once I was on it there was only one way to go. I panicked before I made the top of the ridge and 4 wheeled back down in reverse till I could slide it 180. I parked back up closer to the road and went for a walk. I parked 38 miles south of my house which gives me about 15 miles of shed hunting heading back north to the State line.



And what a shed hunting spot this will be.









The dividing line between National Forest and the Jicarilla Apache Nation. A gas pipe line runs N and S on the other side of the fence. I know up in my neighborhood you do not want to be on the wrong side of the Ute fence.





I didn't find any sheds, it's still early, but I did find elk winter grounds with lots of fresh sign.

Keep after the sheds and you will be rewarded! I wanted to go look for sheds this weekend but didn't have any time...ran the saw a bunch and bought one of those poly blade heads for the weedeater and ran it a bunch in thick stuff today releasing some loblolly pines I planted last spring...

2 Fridays ago I returned to NM and headed for the top of the ridge. I bumped mulies up the hill. I found lots of tracks and poop of deer, elk, and the Jicarilla wild horses but no sheds. When I got up to the top I found the tracks of the shed crews that preceded me by a day or two. I also got to see some really neat burn areas with lots of oak regeneration but my camera ran out of juice and my spare battery was awol.









I returned to a higher elevation ridge yesterday that was also the scene of a lightening strike.



It looked to me like the fire moves through these areas similar to how hotter fires moved through my cedars in Iowa.



Lieutenant Colonel Dan joined me yesterday. Faint, my San Juan home range in the top of the picture.







There is lots of fresh animal sign up there and I found no evidence of previous shed crews but no sheds. I still need to figure out where the animals were in January. I think that I will check out some bottoms next time.

It has been 50's-60's, sunny, and mostly calm here for the past 2 or 3 weeks. So with winter fast winding down I would say that compared to Iowa and Michigan, southern Colorado is sub tropical. The rye in my food plot is greening up. It has been interesting watching 4' of snow melt and flow through the hood. Fortunately for me the rivers are flowing around at a distance from my home. I turned the sump on down in my crawl space earlier today and it probably pumped less than 10 gallons.

I have now completed 59 Brazilian Jui-Jitsu training sessions. And two weeks ago I added two 1 and 1/2 hour sessions of kick boxing on to my Tuesday and Thursday BJJ sessions. I experienced some after session brain fog and I gassed out during Thursday kick boxing one week ago. I have been trying to figure out how to optimize my diet for maximizing my energy. High carbs, low carbs, no carbs? I may have found the Holly Grail last week, I went into my double training sessions Tuesday and Thursday fasted for 24 hours, part of 36 hour fasts. I know that this seems counter intuitive but this leaves no doubt what fuel my body is running on and I finished up last week mentally acute, full of energy, and in a state of euphoria. Same protocol this week, we'll see?

Thanks TC, 196lb on the scale this afternoon, I'm now looking toward 190.

A friend in town picked up a bunch of mule deer sheds down towards where I had been looking. I asked him about finding elk sheds? He said all elk are still wearing their sheds, 9 days ago he told me that elk antlers will start falling in 10 days and they will fall for 10 days and that will be it. So I guess this helps to explain my inability to find any elk sheds. I will be hitting it again when the ground becomes walkable again.

So what's new in Iowa?

1. A 15% on average increase in property taxes across the board. I heard of one ladies farm taxes going up 78%.

2. I thought Governor Branstad went to China, but today he is signing in to law the use of straight wall rifle cartridges to further decimate Iowa's decimated deer herd.

"Under the Iowa legislation, the fine for possession of a prohibited rifle while hunting deer would be $250 and hunting privileges would be suspended for two years"

But you can still poach a buck without a license and get a $100 fine, if you are dumb enough to register it as Lee did, and maintain your hunting privileges.

Hard to beat a spring snow. Is there, then goes away quickly. Thot of you yesterday as was talking to a guy who hunted mule deer instead of elk in CO this year along the continental divide trail/ sucking air. They took some nice muleys but no elk. Weather was good for them. I never noticed the air until you get above 9000 ft, then lungs are taking deep breaths for a few days. Many don't know, but one of the first uses of
Viagra was by mountaineerers rock climbing as it allows the blood to hold more O2. And I guess would keep a person from rolling down the mountain. When you back to trout fishing? Waters been up too high to do so past few weeks here.
