Tull apple quest

Love these threads. Two November's ago I went with a friend of mine in northwest Nebraska to get scions from some old apple trees (two different varieties) in a Pine Ridge canyon that he picked apples off of when he was a kid (he's in his late 70's now). Wildfires in the Ridge have hit them more than once and they were barely hanging on. We got enough scions that I was able to graft 15--seven of one variety and eight of the other. I took 8 of them (4 each) back out there this past deer season. He will be planting them this spring to continue the history---hopefully in a spot less susceptible to wild fire.

That is a very cool story.

I am just so in awe of the fact that you can preserve an old tree and create a new tree at the same time by grafting. I got the tree bug about 6 years ago when we bought our first property and I've become an addict, collecting varieties and growing many from seed. I'm just now easing into grafting but I know it's gonna be even more of an addiction for me.

So great, Merle. My wife and I just returned from Arkansas, and up in Prairie Grove at the battlefield they've recreated an orchard by the historic Borden house. They allow the public to pick apples in the fall (Arkansas Black), and the sign reads "one bushel per person, per day"!

Hope you had a good trip. I'm searching for two other old Arkansas apples, Brightwater and Howard Sweet, for a couple of museums near there, Cane Hill and the Shilo Museum of Ozark History.
So far no luck, but there's still talk of doing an article in our statewide paper.
Who knows what may show up if they do?!

Thought I'd add a picture of one of the 7 new tull trees I have growing at my house. I made several so it seems I'll have my own tull orchard.
Hope the scions I sent out are growing for everyone as well.

Here are a few update pics of senator, Ark Beauty, and tull.
The leaves on Tull and Caney Fork Limbertwig are huge!

Here is one of the pears I got from Mr Wilson. It's from a pear tree the was planted in the early 1900's in Malvern, Ark. I thought I'd call it Hazel in honor of his soon to be 100 year old Aunt who lives there.
The pic with pears is from the original, what's left of it, tree.
He also gave me scions from a small fruited pear from Prattsville that's about as old.
I ran out of rootstock so I made 3 grafts on a young ayers tree.

The apple nursery. A lot of forum members traded scions with Chuck and myself, here is the result!
I am letting the laterals grow on ark beauty so I should have scions from it if anyone would like to add it next year.

Merle, I'm glad to see this quest working out so well for you. It's the kind of thing I love to follow through your threads.
Thanks NH! I've had a wonderful time with this and really all the other odd varieties we've got growing now.
The Tull apple will probably always be my favorite now just because of the small part I've had in keeping it growing.
I'm ready for that first apple!

I didnt want to admit, but i cleft grafted my Tull scions to what must have been a weak growing rootstock. They didnt take and the stock is struggling. My fault. Next time i will graft to a more reliable stock.

Mr Wilson sent a few pics of one of the old Tull trees with apples. They look great other than some CAR and a little scab, but I'm positive these trees don't see a lot a spraying and this has been a very wet year so far.
I mentioned how I couldn't wait till I had my own Tull apples and a few days later a box of them came in the mail!
They're pretty green still, but Mr Wilson says they make awesome pie.

I drove through Tull a few days ago and thought of this thread. I didn't see any apple trees but I did see a huge pear tree that was loaded near there.

Hello, can anyone point me to anyone willing to sell 2 Tull apple trees or rooted cuttings? I will gladly pay for them and the shipping. Many Thanks!!

Thank you so much, Mr. Hawggard! I already sent him a message about the Tull apples. Hopefully it will all work out. Thanks again!
You're very welcome. Let me know if he was able to send you any. Btw, the oldest, that I know of, apple tree in the state is near Grapevine. Not sure if it's a named variety or not, but it looks to be a great variety down south.
