One great weekend hunting, with no deer down. Only my son and I in camp. Deer are starting to move well, but we had an east wind on Saturday that limits our hunting choices. New rubs and scrapes everywhere, new bucks showing up, and lots of daylight movement. Saw a big buck as we were leaving checking out a thicket that borders the walnut/clover plot. Hunter saw his first deer while hunting at 15 yards. The little buck that I put the picture up. He caught his first coon ever. He chose the location of the set. I already have it scraped and salted down for him. Eating the corn and clover better than the brassicas, but they are starting to browse them.

Looks like you guys had a good time. Not sure why but the kids love the face paint! Firearms opener this saturday.....will be interesting!

I consider myself a good hunter. I have access to many different farms and I have seen 1 spike buck in bow 3 weeks ago. I’m just so frustrated with Indiana deer numbers. They are here and some are big, but seeing a deer a day if you are lucky is for the birds. I’ll keep at it as always. I really thought the best weather in several years would help.

I spoke to a friend that was down south and spoke to a DNR biologist at a check station. They are already talking about harvest numbers, and reducing doe permits more. Maybe they will finally start to see the light, but when they do, the insurance lobby and farmer's lobby will go back to bat in the legislature with more cash....

Because I don't have specific numbers of my own place I started keeping track of hours on stand vs deer seen while on stand. I am roughly averaging about a single deer for every 3 hours on stand. This SEEMS about on par from last year, but I don't have the data to back that up. I do know I have seen numbers that claim we are way down again...... I can't remember where I saw it, but the DNR is now complaining on how they are under funded and are looking at ways to make more money by increasing tag prices and doing away with the land-owner exemption as well. Funny how they want us to support them, yet they don't want to listen to us!!!

I have a lifetime license; they will add a check in fee or something to get us too. I did have a great afternoon sit finally. Saw a big buck going in, saw 5 does on stand, and a small buck tending a doe in the headlights on the way out. Still no mature buck from the stand.

Congrats on the buck!

EHD hit us pretty hard this year, but numbers still seem to be good on the farm. We found four dead deer...all does and I’m sure there were others we didn’t find.

Nice to see your son out there with you!

My main goals for 2018 will be to remove some undesirable trees away from the west side of foodplot at the top of the hill, continue with oak and chestnut plantings, add more apples, sycamore and beech removal, build permanent blinds, and trap or shoot a bobcat if Indiana legalizes them in 2018.

Sounds like the man been doing some thinking while sitting in a deer stand. Sounds like some good improvements. So happy to see you involved with your family. Good times.
