Chestnut hill trees at walmart

Does anyone remember when Walmart usually puts their trees on sale? I was a couple weeks late last year and they didn't have much left. I just don't remember when it was.

If anyone sees some persimmon at an Indiana store, could you report back to this thread please!

They shipped some to my local Walmart for the first time this year. I checked them out today and still marked at regular price. They are also in rough shape.

Yeah they will most likely reduce them as it gets hot and they cant keep up with the watering.

Checked the wal mart on the way to the farm and they had theirs marked down to $12. Not sure if they all have done it. Picked up 5 chestnuts!

I called my dad this weekend, he cleaned out all the leftover 3 gallon Chestnut trees from our local Walmart. They were marked down as well! I just hope he can keep them in good shape until I get them in the ground (likely this winter).

I waited to plant the ones I picked up last spring til they went dormant. Could I go ahead and plant the ones we got this year or would they need frequent watering?

I'm definitely not the right guy to ask but having asked that question quite a few times already, waited until they go dormant will likely give you better survival if you can't water them.

I was on the phone with Chestnut Hill for about half an hour this morning trying to explain my scenario and get advice. I was surprised they didn't think I would need to upgrade to a larger bag or pot if only waiting 7 months but they did recommend checking each tree to confirm they were not root bound. They keep trees in pots for about one year prior to upgrading to the next size.

I'm still planning to move them to a 7 gallon rootmaker or root trapper container of some sort but was hoping the experts here would weigh in (another thread) prior to making my decision on exactly which bag.

My biggest concern at the moment is not being able to water the trees once I plant them in their final destination. Either seldom or possibly not at all. I live 5 thousand miles from the property I'm looking at purchasing and it's in a remote enough area that I would not likely ask a family member to water them.

Planting them in a remote hunting spot is obviously tempting, I just hope I can come up with a way to ensure a high survival rate. I'm already starting to research catchment systems.

We bought 3 chestnuts when they first came in last year at full price and planted them right away since they were still dormant. They look great this year. We went back when the price dropped and bought some persimmons and watered them all summer. We kept them in the same bucket which proved to be a mistake because the roots circled. You live you learn. Guess I should probably invest in a few root makers myself.

i will keep you in mind Seabee. I have never seen them, but there is always a first!

I'm heading to Ga. this weekend for a little hog hunting at my buddies. I called around a few Walmarts down there and located some persimmon. He went today and picked them all up for me. He said they had a boat load of chestnut too but being I own a very small piece of ground I am almost over my tree capacity…lol.

Glad to hear you found some! Good hunting!!!!

Have you watered your chestnuts since planting? What size did you buy? What month did you plant?

That's good to know about your persimmons. At least we can learn from your experience and avoid at least one obstacle. I'm still not sure which planting bag to go with but rootmaker.com has several options. One thing I should point out from my conversation with Chestnut Hill is the potential risk of growing a less drought resistant root ball with the root maker air pruning style planting bags. I admit that this will be a bit of an experiment based on research from others past mistakes. I'll document my progress in case it's successful!

The first 3 chestnuts we planted mid march of 2016. The soil stays pretty moist but not too wet so we watered at time of planting and let Mother Nature handle the rest. Used weed mats and mulch and caged them. Planted the persimmons in February of 2017 on some dryer ground so we will see how they do. Had to spray them last week for bugs. The farm is 2 hours away so going to water a few times a week is not feasible.

Good to hear the chestnuts are doing well without having to baby them. Did you plant them in an area of full sun? I ran a soil test on the property I'm hoping to buy and to my surprise most of it is classified as sandy loam (Cecil, Enon, Toccoa, and Wilkes). I had previously assumed most of the soil in upstate SC was mainly clay, guess I was wrong!

What kind of bugs were attacking your persimmon?

Did you tube or wrap your tree trunks in addition to caging them?

They are in full sun and no I did not tube or wrap them. The persimmons had a small red beetle on them.
