2017 moose

I agree that moose can make a guy crazy,I have shot one in Colorado and 1 in WY.I have been thinking about a Newfoundland hunt but may have to look at alberta.Do you mind sharing outfitter info

Well I have a experience that will haunt me

We got set yesterday morning on a big lake. Right away there was a cow that was bawling. The stalk was on

Dropped down to lake edge and set up and called. Nothing

Moved closer. Bumped a 20-30"er at 70 yards. Guide said get set up. He called. Nothing

As he was walking toward me he stopped and motioned to me to come quietly. He asked if I wanted to shoot a small bull. I said yes - never shot a moose before and he estimated it at 1000lb

The moose was bedded at 80 yards. Down I went and tried closing the distance. Got within 65-70 and had no shot with branches in the way. The guide called. The moose moved, I got up and quickly closed 10 yards. He was angling my way. Had two small shooting lanes. Ranged him as he came through the first -48 yards. Drew and got a good release. Great thunk and the moose ran 30 yards, stopped and I saw the arrow buried behind the shoulder.

Waited 30 min and began the track. Poor blood but good color. Went about 100 yards and the arrow broke and feel out. Found this blood sprayed chest high in the birch. Got about 24" penetration.

The moose got into the thickest nastiest Boggy swamp I've ever been in. No blood visible in the moss

Looked for about 4 hours gridding off that swamp. No moose

Looks like muscle blood...definitely not lung...

I am also going to look for a fixed broadhead that flies good and is bigger than 1" cutting diameter. I will always wonder if my broadhead hurt me. I've got 4 left and two bow hunts for hogs this fall - plan to do some testing!!
Look into the heads below. They are all good heads that should do what you are after. I use the RamCat with success. Its about a 50-50 split between the RamCat Original and Exodus, on what I sell at the shop. Also look at any good quality two blade head, single or dual bevel doesn't matter. Single bevels are wicked heads once they hit meat.

RamCat Original 100gr, 1 3/8" cut(blades are sharp on both sides)
QAD Exodus Full head 100gr- 1 1/4" cut(nothing wrong with the swept version, the full just looks beefier)
G5 Montec(no replacement blades needed, just resharpen)
Muzzy MX3(new version of the old head)

I am perplexed. Saw the moose when he stopped. Arrow was midway up body and looked to be buried to the fletching behind the shoulder. Later I found out 6" of the arrow didn't penetrate the moose when I found the broken off fletched end about 100 yards into the tracking job

I'll never know now.

Guides claim they have had some live over night with an arrow in the chest. I can't believe that

Well the next group found my moose today. Made it 500 yards from where it was shot. No way double lung

I find it hard to believe I didn't get complete pass through with a pure liver shot. My guess is it wasn't completely broadside and only hit one lung and into leg on back side

Shooting 70lb 31" gold tip kinectic arrow (10.8 gpi) and 100 grain 1" muzzy trocar switch head. The sound of the arrow hitting was a dead thwack. Didn't sound like I cracked a rib???

Tough picture attached but this is what he found

Found this picture on internet. I put a red dot on where I think I hit it

I hit either 1 lung or liver. Sick to my stomach. 48 yards shot though the woods. On the chest but not nearly forward enough.

They're rightfully your antlers, but Canadian guides told me it's almost impossible to get them across the border... You'd maybe be allowed to if you traveled back up and tagged them and brought them across yourself.
I've seen moose soak up four good hits from a.300 magnum and still be on their feet. They are one tough animal.
