Rut is in full swing here in central La. Was a good weekend and we took several nice bucks. Fun to watch the rut getting cranked up. Lousy pic but here is a 161" 8 ptView attachment 10114
When you say that the rut is in full swing in LA it leads me to believe you've introduced northern genetics to your herd. I have family that own and operate a high fence in Alabama and the rut inside the fence is blowing up right now but the 10k acres surrounding the 1k acre high fence won't see the rut until late December. Either way it's still some awesome deer you guys are putting on the ground. Congratulations

Nope. These are native home grown bucks.Nothing ever introduced, no DMP, TTT or anything Simply have managed what is available to us. This is when bucks rut around here. Interestingly just 25 miles away in Avoylles parish the rut is not till late December.

Been after this buck since season opened. This is the buck posted earlier that has horn growing out his left eye. Didn't figure he could survive. After almost 2 months this happy hunter finally got on him. Was a bit bigger than I thought. He has broke off a G4 that was about 4" and a drop tine that was about 5-6" nonetheless still was right at 170" . Probably 178-179 before breaking. Made my nieces son mighty happy. Think he was a 6 yr old

Did you look for/at the antler growth in his eye? Have the taxidermist save the skull for you? Wondering what it looked like once he was on the ground and you could get a closer inspection.

Lots of memories and happy hunters being made on Baker's place this year! Really enjoying this thread.

Well, its the time of year we start to find this sort of thing...dead bucks. Here's a beautiful 8 pt found dead several days ago. My best guess is he split his hoove fighting , got infected and here he is. I'll follow with a pic of his leg, Believe he was a 5 yr old 171".

IMG_0240.JPG Here's a pic of his feet. Often when fighting they push so hard it splits a hoof with infection following. The result is a dead deer. Seems like some bucks can survive with broken legs, arrows stuck thru them, gashes and wounds, but let a super star get a little infection and down he goes.

Property across the road from my place is high fenced. The owner does several controlled burns on it every year. He always told me it was shocking how many buck carcasses he finds during those Feb controlled burns.
