    Tried some frost seeding

Just a couple days ago we got 4" of snow and it should be melted for good by now. Had a chance to go to the hunting property. Over the weekend I broadcast some red clover on the snow hoping it melts and washes in. We will see how it does. Originally planted ladino clover so I hope to see...

    Brush Piles for Rabbits

I'm trying to improve the small game population. I've been told to make brush piles by the old timers. The reason I haven't. Is most of the brush is pretty rotten and making something coyote or fox proof would require tons of brush that would take a long time to find. I then did some...

Doe and Fawn - Shoot? If so, what?

In northern areas with winter... Do you shoot the fawn and let the doe go? Do you shoot the doe and let the fawn grow up? Will it find new deer to hang out with during the winter? Shoot both if you can? I'm not interested in talking about shooting big bucks. I want to hear about this doe...

    Acorn draw

As I wrote this. I have a trail camera monitering a dozen or so mature red oaks to find the answer but I don't want to wait until the spring. I will leave the camera out though until the spring to moniter though. Prior to this forum it never occurred to me what type of draw acorns can have...

    Nitro Radish vs Tillage Radish

Any difference in these seeds? From one dealer who sells Tillage Radish the price is $4.95 lb for a 50lb bag. This dealer has extensive offerings for all cover crop products but tends to be 30% more expensive. From another dealer who sells Nitro Radish the price is $2.50 lb for 50lb bag. This...

White Cedar Planting in Quaking Aspen Wetlands

We have an area roughly 4 acres that is seasonally quite wet and full of quaking aspens that are up to about 12" diameter. I am considering planting white cedar in this area. I figured 1 tree every 100 square foot. 1750 trees roughly. Cost on seedlings is about 0.75 cents for a 2+2. There...

    Reasons to increase plot size

What are some reasons to increase food plot size? I've got a plot that is 0.25 acre with room to expand this plot to 0.5 acres. Right now for costs and simplicity I've stuck to rye / ladino clover combination. I have deer on camera multiple times everyday in the clover. It never gets...

    Cultipacker vs Drag Harrow

What's the advantages to a culitpacker? I've always used a drag harrow. Mine is rigid metal with 3" spikes on one side and then about 1/2" knobs on the other. Use the 3" spike side for big seeds and flip over for small seed. I've always though the harrow worked well.

    Perennial Clover - Best Management

So we have a perennial clover plot that was planted in the fall of 2015 with a cereal grain nurse crop. How would you manage the clover to keep it going strong as long as possible for the least amount of money? Is it best to mow and start over if it starts to thin out or annually frost seed or...

Spacing - planting oaks amongst white pine

We have an area of white pine on our property where the canopy is opening up and undergrowth is starting. 4 acres... I figured it would be great time to plant some nice oak seedings amoung the trees before the other under growth takes it over. What spacing would you recommend between trees...

Cereal / clover fall planting deadline?

When would be the lastest date to plant in northern Michigan or if you are familiar with Ontario in wmu 82a which is just east of lake Huron. I've planted in the past in the 1st week of September and my grains were 6 to 8" tall come the 1st week of November which is our rifle season. They may...
