Persimmon and deer browse?

I'm getting ready to plant persimmon. Do deer browse them, or are they safe to leave uncaged? I will of window screen them, but I didn't know if they are something deer like (like apple or pear trees) or if they cool on their own?

catscratch, I don't see persimmon browsed, but I have occasionally (although not often) have seen them rubbed. If just planting seedlings, I would probably take a chance but if planting a grafted tree I would cage. Last year I caged two persimmons that were planted as seedlings after they started bearing fruit. They stood there 12 years with no cage and were okay, but once their value went up to me, I caged them. Might not have been necessary, but would hate to see one rubbed.

I planted ungrafted persimmons 4 years ago. They got hammered by deer and rabbits. I tubed them and the cows rubbed them down. Then I caged them and they are coming on strong. I have no fruit trees in the area, so I assume they were the tastiest thing around.

I'll cage as many as I can and "experiment" (hope they don't hammered) with the rest.
Thanks for the input.

Cat - you have been around long enough to know the answer..... You plant it....the deer destroy it. That's just the game we play! They either eat it to the ground or rub the piss out of it until it dies. I have even had deer remove the cage and rub and eat one of my chestnuts to a ragged stick! Never did find the guilty party involved!!!!

Yep! My stopgap measure was to window screen them above the leader until I get the cages made. I have experimented with "hiding" trees with some luck, but nothing long term enough to be able to make a solid plan yet.

I put mine in 4' tubes. I can't get them out of the tubes, they keep getting nipped off. Never again will I buy 5' tubes. They definitely eat on mine.

I telescope with a mesh tube, which solves the problems of browse, chaffing, and weak trunks.

Pic didn't show for me...

Update; I still haven't had time to cage them. A storm blew the screen off one and there are four that I didn't protect at all. Nothing has been nipped yet (knock on wood) even though some have been planted in a plot that is seeing major deer use right now.
