Mange

No pictures of anything, but is anyone else seeing a lot of mange this year? I haven't seen a coyote with a full coat in months. I have seen a few that are completely "naked." Kinda sad. Seems like it has really taken off around here...

Kill them all and bury them as deep as you can. That will help stop a lot of it. the ones that die naturally and the next dog stops and investigates, picks up the mange.

About 25% around here have mange. Survival of the fittest. Some have just small patches and others do look bald. Miserable disease and burying is the best but I don't know if I have the gusto to bury a deep enough for that.

Mostly burying them deep to keep another stupid coyote from digging them back up. It only sucks if you have rock hard clay or live in Middle Tennessee where there is a rock under every shovel full.

When I was out Pheasant hunting back in the third week of January I killed one coyote and missed one that both had beautiful coats without any touch of mange. This was near the Glen Elder area. Where a bout's are you located where your seeing all the mange?

I had a red fox that I had to shoot with my 22 magnum last summer because it had a terrible case of mange. It was bedding down less than 25 yards from my house and lost it's ability to hunt. It was scrounging around under my suet feeders just to get some food. Called the DNR and they advised me to dispatch the fox and bury it deep, which I did. Mother Nature can be downright cruel!

Seems to come and go in waves out here in Kansas, we get some years where all you see is mangy yotes, then you don't see a lot around for a while then it starts over again. However I have noticed those mangy yotes are pretty darn easy to call in...

Like boot said; mangy yotes are easier to call and trap.
I've never had a problem with yotes as I've never seen an issue with fawning (most of our does have twins in the fall so there isn't much fawn predation). But when I'm on the deer forums it seems everyone hates yotes and wants them gone. They get blamed with fawn predation a lot, why be concerned with mange and bury them if you want them gone?

Its funny you mention that because I had the same thoughts. I've never seen a massive impact on fawn numbers vs. coyotes in my area, I'm sure there is to some degree. But hell I've watched one year old fawns chase off wandering coyotes, between that and good cover I think the yotes, from what I've seen, don't do a tremendous amount of damage, thats visible anyways in my neighborhood.

I don't want them gone. I hate seeing them in such bad shape. I kinda wonder if it hasn't been getting cold enough for long enough to "take care" of the problem lately.

I get that, I don't like seeing any animal suffer and mange would SUCK! Honestly I've been watching mangy yotes survive our (Kansas) winters for decades. They seem to find a way. The last time I remember mange not being a common disease was in the 80's when fur prices were decent and trapping was common. Once the market dropped and trapping became less common mange jumped in population. Mother nature basically says "if you don't control them I will".
