What am I missing? Math is hard!

I recently purchased 41% GLY (compare and save brand) at Tractor Supply. I was planning on 2 quarts per acre as that is the most consistent recommended application I hear. But, according to the label that’s WAY too week. What am I missing?

Label:
2.5oz per gallon will kill 300sq foot area

Unless my math is off that translates to a 32oz (1 QT) container treating only 3840 square feet or .0882 acres.

Even the on gallon (4 quart) size would only treat .3528 acres.

Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing something or the label is unlike any other 41% glyphosate solution I’ve ever seen. I spray at 1.5-2qts per acre when I spray the 41% glyphosate. Are you talking about dissolving solid AMS in a sprayer or is it already liquid form?

You are correct 2 quarts per acre is on the lower side of the application side. 4 quarts per acre is closer to the most recommended rate. Looking at this from a plant perspective, of the weeds are small or very young the lower rate usually works. For weeds that are more mature use the 4 quarts per acre rate.

And AMS can be added to a backpack sprayer, I would look for a liquid variety or mix and make into a liquid before adding.

Dissolve the AMS then pour it in if you want to be sure that you don't clog your sprayer. Otherwise, pour it in slow and keep mixing with a stick as you pour. I clogged a 150 gallon sprayer with a PTO agitator by pouring in too fast.

I’d use liquid or spray grade AMS. If I can find it.

Here is a label for a generic 41% I pulled from the net. Notice the difference will be acreage beside square foot as it it targeted at a different end user. If you look at the differences in weeds you will see different recommendations for how much needs to be used based on testing by companies for control of different types of weeds. These weeds will also be at the preferred stages of growth which many food plotters are well past when it comes time to spray. Just keep that in the back of your mind.

How is your sprayer calibrated? If you use the rate in that chart (2.5 oz per gallon) and your sprayer uses 20 gallons of water per acre, you’d be at 50 oz of gly per acre.

I think your label is just geared more towards city folk and gardeners. Apply 2 qts per acre and be done with it. Check the label and see if your version of glyphosate has a surfactant already added - if not, add one.

That is a rate chart for spot spraying, I'm guessing. When you buy those little containers at a retailer, they are geared for that, rather than crop application.

I’m going to use a 4 spray boom on my Solo backpack sprayer. I’m only treating a few acres. So not exactly calibrated, this will be the “pilot course” for sure.

If you’ve got a 4 gallon backpack sprayer, mix 16-18 ounces in per fill up and you’ll have a good kill.

For either application I've found that 3 oz per gallon is more than enough to kill anything graveyard dead. Around the house when I liquid weed eat, Iv'e found that 2.5 oz per gal works just fine, but go to 3 oz per gal on my plots. It takes a little time to see the results, but that rate has worked well for me.

Good to hear! I’m sure their market isn’t farming and food plotting but seems odd the recommended application would be that far off for area. According to the label I’d need 11 quarts for “up to” an acre. Ridiculous.

64 oz to 25 gallon ATV sprayer 12 oz to 4 gallon backpack sprayer is what I use killed all deader the JFK.

Agreed. Just put 3oz per gallon and it will kill about anything it touches. Might have a hard time on waxy type leaves. Use some AMS or some surfactant to help. Make sure whatever you want to kill is wet after application not dripping wet (just a waste) and you'll be fine. Should start seeing yellowing or cupping of leaves after 3 days or so.
