New here looking for property advice

I'm looking to really make this property much more "huntable." I'm located in Eastern Kansas. It's 160 acres and only has one road frontage from the south end, property is 1 mile long. I'm thinking of clearing an access route along the east property line, that way I can access the NE part of the timber when I have westerly winds. The one picture with the 2 white lines is where I'd like to make a travel corridor, how would I go about this? Looking for any advice on what you all would do. Thanks!

I think you’re definitely on the right track as far as an access road along the east side. What’s up with the property boundary cutting through the field on the east? Seems like the fence row would be the line, unless you’re dividing the acreage with someone else. I like the idea of a tree planted access path across the middle with the white lines, also. A gap at the edges for tractor access makes natural pinch points, too.

The property line really does run like it's shown. I think the property used to be 320 acres but has been split off and sold.
Don't have much experience with tree plantings, I was thinking of maybe just planting some switchgrass or something to connect the west to east. And mowing a path down the middle of the grass so the deer can walk through it easily and still be "screened" in.

Plant a strip of NWSG in that section and they'll make their own trail through it

Nice to see another Kansan,Looks like you have a plan,I really like planting trees though but have planted quite abit of NWSG.Look forward to following along

To make that connection, I would plant a variety of things with multiple layers.

Start with a couple rows of oaks or something that will get big, then on the outside of that add some bushy type stuff......adding NWSG along the edge may not even be needed but would help in the short term.

We are currently doing similar things with 2 areas and one we did as I mentioned above, the other we just planted a bunch of spruce and pines and left it go......the brush and tree regeneration is impressive and the trees are finally getting going. Deer use if for sure.

For a travel corridor I would consider a mix of tall native grasses with some cedars mixed in or even create edges with the cedars with the grass in the middle to reduce the deer being seen or them seeing you. The cedars would eventually make a great place for an elevated blind and you can mow a path thru the tall grass to nudge them in the right direction if needed as well. May also add some habitat diversity for you as well. You could substitute MG clumps for the cedars as well if you have something against cedars.

Thanks guys, I have definitely thought of putting cedars in with native grasses.
I use to hunt a place that was nothing but cedar trees and tall native grass, it seemed the deer loved it.

If we would get some rain it would be time to start moving cedars,I like moving 2ft cedars and after a year or so they really start growing,thing to keep in mind is that you may not want to plant cedars in NWSG that you will plan on burning

I never even thought about what I'd do if I had to burn it off, glad you mentioned that.
Thanks for all the advice guys, I really appreciate it. I plan to get busy on this property after season is over. I feel like there is a lot I could do here to make the hunting better.
