Florida axis deer hunt

Scores of axis deer escaped from a high fence ranch a few years ago and have established a growing population in the wild. I hired a guide to put me on a young doe for meat. It took several hours of quietly travelling through the thick forest to find them. The shot was taken at about 85 yards with my 30-30 Winchester carbine. The animal was struck through the chest organs and quickly expired. I'll butcher the meat myself as taught by my Grandad over 50 years ago . - TR

Congrats. There are quite a few herds like that. I have some on a ranch I can hunt near Okeechobee.

Congrats! I hunted axis deer with a bow in Hawaii one year. It was a guided spot and stalk hunt. It was only $200 for the hunt and you could shoot a doe or ewe for that price. If you shot a buck, you paid by the inch. My sight had been bumped in travel and I missed a doe at 30 yards. Later, I had an opportunity at a large buck at 20 yards. The guide encouraged me to shoot, but I was much too poor at the time so I passed. They are very cool deer!

Something you would know about ! I would put it on a par with elk or pronghorn, it’s good !

I like elk and pronghorn but axis is the top of the heap in my opinion. I’ve heard sika deer (non native but run wild in coastal MD and VA) are just as good.
