In 2009 planted Big Blue in mono culture for visual screen. Under drought does not produce seed heads and only gets about 18" tall. My row of CIR along side of it reaches 4' every year. On average years 30 to 50% will produce 5' seed head. 100% of seed head falls over by December. This grass is a very thick stand. My Big Blue in the CRP is in small clumps and over 50% will stand most of the winter.

Was thinking stand was so thick might be stressed for moisture and nutrients. If that is the case wood running boom sprayer over with every other nozzle blocked applying glyphosate to thin help.

Where are you located?

Are you saying you have Big Bluestem that never gets over 18 inches tall? What cultivar of Big Blue is it?

I don't think the thickness of the stand is the problem. My Big Blue is extremely thick and in the worst of years will be at least 8 feet tall by the end of the growing season.
