SAVAGE 220 BOLT ACTION SLUG GUN VS STRAIGHTWALL CALIBERS

I bought this well built CVA Scout in 44 MAG for less than $400. and mounted a Bushnell Dusk & Dawn scope. Accuracy is superb at 100 yards shooting Hornady Lever-evolution ammo. 44 MAG hits very hard within typical woods hunting distances. Recoil is moderate. TR

SAVAGE 220 BOLT ACTION SLUG GUN VS STRAIGHTWALL CALIBERS

I've enjoyed very good success with my CVA Scout chambered in 44 MAG. Low cost rifle but very accurate for deer killing shots out to about 100 yards or so. Recoil is moderate. Scope is a Bushnell Dusk & Dawn featuring settings for 1.5 - 4.5 X. Good hunting to you! TR

    Bullet weight question

I have hunted several deer species across North America with differing body weights. As an Air Force NCO my assignments took me to many interesting places. My shots rarely exceeded 125 yards even when hunting western mule deer. The myth is that big deer are harder to kill than smaller deer...

    7.62x39 deer bullets

I have a friend who lives near Manassas, Virginia who annually shoots six or more deer per year. His CZ 527 is topped with a Simmons 2-7X scope zeroed for 100 yards. Ammo choice is Winchester Power Points featuring 123 grain soft tips. A deadly outfit, indeed! TR

    .22 Quiet and Accurate ammo

I shoot squirrels with Remington 22 longs in my Henry lever gun. But my shooting distances rarely exceed 30 yards. TR

    Bullet Performannce

I have discovered that Winchester EXTREME POINT ammo produces a giant entrance hole but mediocre penetration. I will go back to plain Jane Power Point ammo because of much better penetration. - TR

    Florida axis deer hunt

Scores of axis deer escaped from a high fence ranch a few years ago and have established a growing population in the wild. I hired a guide to put me on a young doe for meat. It took several hours of quietly travelling through the thick forest to find them. The shot was taken at about 85 yards...

SAVAGE 220 BOLT ACTION SLUG GUN VS STRAIGHTWALL CALIBERS

A good supply of 20 gauge slugs is difficult to find in my area. So I bought a CVA Hunter model in 44 MAG. This is a very accurate break action single shot rifle. I fitted it with a 1.5-4.5X Bushnell scope. Recoil is light and ammo is readily available. TR

    Aging venison in walk-in cooler

It is highly important to skin the carcass as soon as possible to prevent a sour taste in the meat. Hanging the animal with the hide on is not good. - TR

    Bullet weight question

The 180's will produce a flatter trajectory for long shots beyond 150 yards. 200 grain bullets really hit hard for animals larger than deer. My Uncle Larry shot many moose and bears in Canada with his 35 Remington Marlin rifle back in the 1960's. Your Buckhammer will do the job for you! - TR
