    .22lr Rifles

I'm a big fan of Henry rifles. This armadillo was downed using hollow tip ammo by Winchester. TR

    Favorite Calibers?

I downed many deer with a Savage lever gun in .308 but have been hunting with my 30-30 carbine for the last 30 years. Main reason is that I do not need the long distance power of the .308 and found my 30-30 is just as lethal at typical forest distances. TR

    Bullet Performannce

My son-in-law recently downed a large nine pointer in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania with his 30-06 slide action rifle. Shooting distance was about 50 yards at an excited buck as the result of a four man deer drive. At the shot, the buck bounded away but crashed to the ground after a run of...

    Successful deer hunt in Florida

The hunt about an hour after dawn. We hunted along the Suwannee River in Florida. After about 30 minutes, we spotted several deer but they spooked because we were too close, about 25 yards. Then we hunted a different area and saw fresh sign but no deer. After a couple hours, we spotted two...

SAVAGE 220 BOLT ACTION SLUG GUN VS STRAIGHTWALL CALIBERS

I bought this well built CVA Scout in 44 MAG for less than $400. and mounted a Bushnell Dusk & Dawn scope. Accuracy is superb at 100 yards shooting Hornady Lever-evolution ammo. 44 MAG hits very hard within typical woods hunting distances. Recoil is moderate. TR

SAVAGE 220 BOLT ACTION SLUG GUN VS STRAIGHTWALL CALIBERS

I've enjoyed very good success with my CVA Scout chambered in 44 MAG. Low cost rifle but very accurate for deer killing shots out to about 100 yards or so. Recoil is moderate. Scope is a Bushnell Dusk & Dawn featuring settings for 1.5 - 4.5 X. Good hunting to you! TR

    Bullet weight question

I have hunted several deer species across North America with differing body weights. As an Air Force NCO my assignments took me to many interesting places. My shots rarely exceeded 125 yards even when hunting western mule deer. The myth is that big deer are harder to kill than smaller deer...

    7.62x39 deer bullets

I have a friend who lives near Manassas, Virginia who annually shoots six or more deer per year. His CZ 527 is topped with a Simmons 2-7X scope zeroed for 100 yards. Ammo choice is Winchester Power Points featuring 123 grain soft tips. A deadly outfit, indeed! TR

    .22 Quiet and Accurate ammo

I shoot squirrels with Remington 22 longs in my Henry lever gun. But my shooting distances rarely exceed 30 yards. TR

I can't tell the difference between this stag and a mid-size bull elk that I toppled in Wyoming. TR

I Need Photos of your Deer

I downed this red stag at a hunting preserve located in southern Ohio. TR

I Need Photos of your Deer

This red stag was taken in rough country during the winter. 30-30 is a keeper! TR

    Bullet Performannce

I have discovered that Winchester EXTREME POINT ammo produces a giant entrance hole but mediocre penetration. I will go back to plain Jane Power Point ammo because of much better penetration. - TR

    Florida axis deer hunt

Scores of axis deer escaped from a high fence ranch a few years ago and have established a growing population in the wild. I hired a guide to put me on a young doe for meat. It took several hours of quietly travelling through the thick forest to find them. The shot was taken at about 85 yards...
