    Bur Oak question

I think Needmorebrush said it perfectly. Planting smaller trees with better root systems gets the trees off to a huge advantage to bare root or balled and burlapped trees. We have looked a study done by the University of Nebraska where they planted 2 inch balled and burlapped trees that were...

    RootMaker 18 cell tray

I have found that the timings on up shifting from rootmakers is pretty important to get continued growth from the plant. When left too long in the trays they will stall out on us and not continue with growth spurts. We plant a lot of acorns but also do Chestnut, maples, locust, sycamore...

    Oak identification

Could be or they are just really comfortable in that area. Always tough to say! The more I look at your pictures I think that top one is a red crossed with something. Usually they are more rounded at the base like the ones in your hand. Might be the red and the black mixed together a little...

    Oak identification

I would say the top picture and the one in your hand are red oaks. And the other picture with the smaller acorns is black oak.

    Acorn float test

Man I'm jealous of that many oaks on your property. I have 160 acres in Nebraska with not a single oak when we bought it. It's getting better as I plant more, but they are all pretty small yet. As for needing acorns it was a pretty bumper crop here for bur oak so I am good. Somebody out...

    Acorn float test

I go back and forth on freezing them. I have never tried it. Now that you bring that up I may try freezing a small batch this winter and trying it out. They freeze in nature. If it doesn't work for you there is always next fall to collect!

    Acorn float test

Jeff, In my experience if you have room to sow them all go ahead and plant the floaters too. I have done float tests and planted the floaters and still had about 50 percent germination out of them. So I quit doing float tests! However if you are in a limited space just planting the sinkers...

    Acorn draw

Nice work on planting oaks Jerry! Much like the Might Acorn thread says a diversity of White and red oaks is very beneficial. Where I'm at in Nebraska it doesn't seem to be specific family (red/white) that drops first. Generally the White oak , bur oak, dwarf and regular chinkapin are...

One Gallon RootMaker Grown Seedling for Sale

Our Chinkapin came from Southeast Nebraska. All we have left for straight white oak are 2 in a 3 gallon container we got them in as a small seedling from a grower in Wisconsin. Swamp White oaks we have available in 1 gallon and they are collected in either Lincoln or Omaha Nebraska. I hope...

    Growing oaks questions

Looks like I stand corrected! Sounds like that will be my experiment next year. While out collecting today I made it a point to collect larger and smaller acorns off the same tree to watch the difference in the two. I'll let you know what I find out. Planting acorns large or small is always a...

    Growing oaks questions

I like to collect from the more mature trees. Odds are they have withstood and adapted to the weather conditions in your area more than a smaller tree would have. That should be passed on down to its offspring. I also wouldn't worry much about the larger the acorn the larger the seedling. We...

    Oaks...Chinkapins? Little help!!

I think tree #2 might be a chestnut oak. The acorns look alot like it but the leaves are a little different. Always tough to say with some oaks!
