Stone Branch, build it, they will come.

    Callery Pear Grafting

I would let them grow so that the open space is filled in faster. You can slowly trim back any unwanted central leaders over the next few years and/or train them as limbs, which if desired can also eventually be eliminated. That would especially be my plan on one as large as that tree in the...

    Native Hunter 2023 Apples

Six years ago I planted this Keener Seedling (aka Rusty Coat) on MM111 from Century Farm Orchards. I never gave it any special attention (other than caging) after planting, and don’t even remember if I watered it the first year. The tree grew well but hadn’t flowered much until this year. As of...

    Native Hunter 2023 Apples

This is what my pear topworking is looking like so far this year. As you can see, I already have my cane bracing up. Better too early than too late. This one is growing fast and might have already broken off in the strong wind yesterday without the bracing.

I think that of the ones I mentioned Gate, Olympic Giant and Gallaway are the latest. With a big mature tree, all of those will go deep into November, and in PA they might be later. I know that Olympic Giant would grow well in PA, and WG shows the other two being good in Zones 5-9. Blue Hill...

Yes, I know you and want to welcome you to this forum. I'm very glad you have joined us and look forward to seeing you here. I was just thinking about pears the other day, and came to the conclusion that where I live it seems like all pears are bulletproof. I stayed away from Bartlett...

Looks like a dream property Cutman. Congratulations on your new home. PS - Zone 4a is a cold one, and not just any fruit tree is going to work. I would recommend contacting Ryan at Blue Hill for some guidance.

    Keystone Krops

Those are nice looking logs. I have a 27 inch DBH walnut in my yard that needs to come out. It's 15 feet up to the first limbs. I wonder if I will have a hard time getting a logger for one tree, even though it should be a valuable tree.

Late Winter projects, locusts, cedars and new stands

If you haven't seen it so far, you are probably okay. When CAR is a problem, it shows up to some extent every year and starts immediately on young trees. However, fireblight usually does not show up until a tree starts flowering, and some years can be severe while other years show none at all...
