    Blackberries

Many people have not seen how thick and impenetrable wild blackberries can get in ground that they really like. I'm talking about thickets that a deer would not even think about trying to enter. In fact, the thickets can get so rank that even a rabbit can barely maneuver through them. A few...

    Blackberries

On my land, Remedy Ultra sprayed during bloom killed the existing briers and made the roots dormant for 3 years, but after that they were back with a vengeance. In ground that they love, I'm not sure they can be eradicated unless you plow the ground intermittently.

    Persimmon grove on new farm

Yes, trees of about 1 or 2 inches in diameter are your best ones to graft. They will heal over and fill in the space quickly.

    Persimmon grove on new farm

Any ripe persimmon is attractive to deer. If deer aren't coming in daylight, it's likely because they don't feel safe at the spot. Food is important, but safety trumps food. However, since you have so many of those trees, I would graft a few of them to other varieties. You could get some...

Using dried apples for pies is something old timers did for a special winter treat. They couldn’t go anywhere and buy fresh apples in the winter...

How I make fried apple pies

Start with dried apples. Any apples will work but I like those on the tart side best. 2 gallons of dried apples make roughly 40 pies. Cook the apples. Add any spices you want. I like cinnamon and sometimes a little sugar. You have to add lots of water as they cook. Mash with a potato...

    Field Edges

It depends on the layout. By field edge I assume you mean the edge of a woods. Switch will grow at the edge of a woods, but it won't be as thick and nice due to tree roots sucking away moisture and nutrients. Also, sunlight is a factor. The north edge of a woods is notorious for being even...

    Operation: Move my trees!

Several years ago, we did the same thing with a bunch of apple trees. A road project took my inlaws house and yard, so we got a backhoe and moved some big trees. Most were successful, but we did lose some as well. Best wishes, and I hope everything works out well for you.

What kind of tree is this?

That is a Southern Red Oak (Quercus falcata). Great wildlife tree.
