    The other thing I read, which I'm going to try, Is that grass will compete with Oak saplings. Oak roots are shallow and need about one foot of grass free area around them. Thanks for your suggestion on water. I will try several different soil saturation amounts and post results.

    Agreed, mine leafed out also. Michigan had a longer drier Summer than usual. El Nino was really Epic this year. But next year I'm setting up rain barrels and a drip line to test my theory.
