    Best mast producing oak trees

So far as oaks I've planted here over the past 25 years... Bur oak has been the hands-down production winner. Seedlings have started bearing good crops by 8-10 years, bear annually and heavily. Big, sweet, ping-pong ball size acorns. Heaviest producers have been some I brought to KY from the...

    What type of Hawthorne?

No 'e', unless you're talking about Nathaniel. I can't tell from the pics. Here(KY/TN line), it would most likely be cockspur hawthorn - C.crus-galli. I have grafted pear onto C.crus-galli understock. It's quite dwarfing.

    Top-working Persimmons

Of equal importance is aftercare. Persimmon is adamant about pushing shoots from the roostock, and unless you're diligent about keeping them rubbed off - probably need to check 'em once or twice a week for the entire first growing season - they'll rapidly divert all resources to pushing growth...

Grafting persimmons - cleft or bark graft?

First ones I grafted, 25+ years ago, before someone told me they were 'hard to do', were just a simple whip graft - got 100% takes. Anymore, I just do a simple bark graft, 'cause I'm usually using a smaller scion on a larger rootstock. Most important thing about grafting persimmons is...

    Pear Tree Selection

Fireblight ate Korean Giant's lunch here in KY, both times I grew it. Keiffer, Orient, Pineapple, etc. are hard to beat... they'll take a FB hit and keep right on producing. There's a reason why almost all the OLD pear trees you see at old farmsteads across the South are Keiffer and its...

Northern Pecans, Hickories, other nut tree species, etc.

Ran across this video on hickories today. Got to see some old friends and some nutgrowing legends who have now passed, like Parker Coble, at Gettysburg.. http://www.woodlanders.com/blog/2020/3/30/episode-28-hickory-nut-growers?fbclid=IwAR1QIBcFt1WI9Ry_yXvG67jy9Xe7TIGC0QmF6MSmv0Nu875NJDtX0s8YEYs

Northern Pecans, Hickories, other nut tree species, etc.

In the Introduction thread, Mennoniteman asked me about pecans for Pennsylvania. There are nut growers in PA, who've been growing northern/midwestern pecans for decades... some quite famously - John Hershey at Downington, Parker Coble at Gettysburg. So... Mennoniteman, here goes: First, a very...

Easy Way to Remove Persimmon Seeds?

Don't any of y'all eat persimmons or use pulp for pudding, cookies, etc.? I know it's the DeerHunterForum, but d@mn! Yeah, I've planted persimmons, crabs, pears and oaks for the hooved rats, but I'm mostly planting varieties that *I* wanna eat, too! Most of my persimmon seeds are 'leftover'...

    Introduce yourself

Thanks for the welcome. Mennoniteman -There are northern/ultra-northern pecan varieties that are grown as far north as Michigan, Iowa, even into portions of southern Canada(Ontario) - and, yes, many of them will do well in PA. In general, most produce smaller nuts than the Southern pecan...

    Grafting Oak Trees

I've been grafting oaks for over 25 years. Got hooked up with NAFEx and NNGA folks selecting low-tannin oaks as potential nut crops. Have several of those low-tannin (white oak species) selections as well as a number of hybrids and large-acorn strain bur oaks. They're no more difficult to do...
