    Direct Seeding Acorns

Was working in the yard here at home this weekend. We live up at 6,700' elevation and takes a bit for spring to arrive. I had stuck a few bur oak acorns inside a clay soil drainage here at the house. So far I have found 9 of them up and growing. I don't have squirrels or hogs to get after them...

    River Ranch Project

My neighbor was kind enough to stop by and take a few pics today for me while checking his wheat. It's turned off a bit dry now out there but the little oaks are doing okay. Actually had maybe another 6 come up and hoping to return to transplant those soon. The one pic of the caged oak makes it...

    Not hunting……

How they ever grow up is a wonder to me. So many things want to eat them. Nice pics and hope the little buggers make it.

    Oak acorns for sale?

I am planning on picking up bur oak acorns again this fall. If it is anything like last year, I'll have plenty. Just pay my UPS charges and I'll be happy to help. Personally I'd love to buy sawtooth acorns or perhaps chinkapin acorns to try if anyone has a surplus. I'll email a UPS label all...

    Drought and Survival

That is great news. Finally a year where all the wildlife is catching a break hopefully too. Should be great nesting cover. Hays is back to almost normal moisture now for last 6 months as well. Had .3" earlier this week on the farm and calling for up to 1" tonight. Truly amazing what normal...

    Water source for wildlife

Looks like I need to get a sandpoint permit from Kansas, seems easy enough, and then can look into wind or solar powered for the tank. I kind of would like to try a solar panel as I have never done anything solar and it may be handy to learn about it.

    Water source for wildlife

I was perusing Whitetail Property listings and now can't locate the farm I was looking at. It had a sandpoint well hooked up with a solar panel/battery system for maintaining water in a 4' diameter horse tank. There were pics of deer, turkeys and even a bobcat drinking from it. My place has a...

    River Ranch Project

I think that was 2 years ago now. My daughter killed a nice buck this last Dec and my son got a nice one the year before. I think we are having some fawn recruitment issues due to very healthy coyote and bobcat populations. The drought actually dried the river totally up last year for the first...

    Direct Seeding Acorns

More wins. Found a total of 16 bur oak seedlings on this weeks visit. All have been weed whacked and caged. Also watered though we have gotten great moisture in May. More is forecast. We'll see if these little guys can make it in a hostile environment. If they do, they are the only oaks within...

    River Ranch Project

Well it's been a couple of years since my last post. The epic drought in western KS during 23 and 24 wiped out all fresh plantings I had done. The deer continued to use the river and I increased my cedar thinning efforts. Last Sept or Oct, my rancher friend said he had a bucket of bur oak acorns...

Late Winter projects, locusts, cedars and new stands

    Breezy lol. I can relate.

    Direct Seeding Chestnuts....Sort of...

Short tubes and permethrin. I may try both on my spot. The tall tubes roasted them previously but I could see the short tubes adding protection till they get 15-18" tall. Good luck!

    Direct Seeding Acorns

Update post on my acorn project. Gathered acorns in Hays city park in Sept/Oct. Float tested. Stored good ones in fridge a few months and planted late fall. In my overgrown pasture, I weed whacked 4' diameter circles to get down to the dirt and planted 4-5 in each circle. 10 circles. I get out...

Late Winter projects, locusts, cedars and new stands

Put my first 3 tanks of gas through the MS180. Its a pleasure to use for sure. I may have the carb running a bit rich. Will youtube the adjustment on that and correct. That said, I cut maybe 200 cedars the last few days with it. Way easier than the 60 cc Huskie. Thanks for the tip.

Late Winter projects, locusts, cedars and new stands

The Stihl 180 was discontinued about 4 months ago but found the last one in stock within about 100 miles. Going to grab that later today and give it a shot. Sounds like a great option. Thanks again for the recommendation there.
