    Direct Seeding Chestnuts....Sort of...

Short tubes and permethrin. I may try both on my spot. The tall tubes roasted them previously but I could see the short tubes adding protection till they get 15-18" tall. Good luck!

    Direct Seeding Acorns

Update post on my acorn project. Gathered acorns in Hays city park in Sept/Oct. Float tested. Stored good ones in fridge a few months and planted late fall. In my overgrown pasture, I weed whacked 4' diameter circles to get down to the dirt and planted 4-5 in each circle. 10 circles. I get out...

Put my first 3 tanks of gas through the MS180. Its a pleasure to use for sure. I may have the carb running a bit rich. Will youtube the adjustment on that and correct. That said, I cut maybe 200 cedars the last few days with it. Way easier than the 60 cc Huskie. Thanks for the tip.

The Stihl 180 was discontinued about 4 months ago but found the last one in stock within about 100 miles. Going to grab that later today and give it a shot. Sounds like a great option. Thanks again for the recommendation there.

My local station has unleaded with no ethanol and I use it in all my small engines. Appreciate the tip on the 180. Will take a look at those for sure. Stihl learning here:) lol.

Mennoniteman, Any suggestions for a small saw? Current husqvarna goes about 15 pounds. It's a great saw for a variety of things but perhaps overly powerful for cedar thicket work. Looking at Echo 2511T with Oregon bar as one option. Want to stay gas fed on it.

This picture shows you a bit how they are actually choking out the cottonwoods. To compound it on my place, if there was ever a fire, the heat from these giant cedars burning next to the cottonwoods would kill them too. I am leaving bedding thickets with cedars bordering them. These are so...

    CROSSBOW HERBICIDE

I haven't used Crossbow but I have sprayer envy. What model/brand is that one?

I've got thickets that are impenetrable and nothing else grows in them. I see more deer bedding along the edges than inside them. And they are hugely invasive on the plains. If I cut them all down, within 5 years, they would be back growing everywhere. I say that because as I am cutting, there...

MM, took your advice and dropped some locusts and just sprayed the cut ends. Others that seemed dangerous to drop by myself I simply girdled and sprayed. One big 22" one got girdled twice just for personal satisfaction and sprayed. Few pics along river where we cut more sections of cedars out...

Send some to Hays. Sure need it out there.

    The Massey

Glad to hear eastern KS is doing better on moisture. The Hays area is still very dry. The river actually quit flowing last Oct. Most of the pot holes dried up and all the fish died by Dec. Over the last 3 months the spring activity in the area has filled up the majority of the holes but still...

If anyone needs a recipe for killing locusts, I've been using 2 quarts of Triclopyr 4 and 1.5 gallons of diesel. Same stuff kills yuccas and prickly pear cactus. I hose down the trunk and the girdle cut well and they die very nicely.

Always enjoy doing habitat work in late winter before the ticks and heat set in. We girdled and killed 12 large locusts and a hundred saplings this week. We also cut around 100 small cedars and a few larger ones. Trying to clear more openings in several thickets to allow more light and open up...
