Took this Picture Sunday at 11:45 Am of a Pure American Chestnut Tree with Viable nuts from other American Chestnuts Nearby. This Tree is 10 Years old this Year with no Blight ,I got the nuts 1n 2012 from the ACCF when I was invited to come their and pick them,I have Pure American trees from...
My biggest one is about 35 feet tall and 5" diameter at breast height,I planted the nuts in may 2013.Just today I put 56 viable nuts(passed the float test) from this tree in the refrigerator for Stratification.I need 4 more in my orchard and will keep about 15 nuts to ensure that I get them.
I picked about 20 pure American chestnut burs today,There are at least twice that many left on the trees that I could not get to. About 1/3 look like they have viable nuts in them
oaks carry it,Oaks and chestnuts are in the beech family,Blight enters the chestnut tree through cracks or damaged area's of the bark.I spray my Chestnut trees bark with Biota max every spring.Biota max has the right soil microbes to counter the blight, seems to help in my opinion
Soil microbes kill the blight in the soil,Blight attacks the trunk and branches not leaves ,flowers or fruit,I am pretty sure but not positive. The blight girdles the stem and chokes the Phloem which kills anything above it.The TACF after 8 years will infect an orchard with 2 strains of blight(a...
I have about 50 trees from ACCF seeds that were planted in 2013 4 of them only got the blight last year and 3 of them are actually recovering(will see how they do this spring) the 4th got ambrosia beetle that killed the main stem that I cut down only to have stump sprouts pop up which I cut back...
I wish I had not planted a bradford pear tree on my property, very invasive species.I had 2 cut one down 2 years ago after it broke in half and still getting suckers coming up,seriously thinking about cutting the other 1 down and having the stump ground and planting an American hardwood there.
