    Brassica experts please step inside

Also need to know your % of calcium and magnesium. I'm guessing they are way off, which produces the poor ph and is probably partly responsible for the water problems.

    Sugar on plots

The article actually has nothing to do with sugar. What he does is spreads fertilizer just a week or two before bow season to 'sweeten' up his plots. Sent from my SM-N920R4 using Tapatalk

    Sugar on plots

Spreading sugar on your fields is a great way to feed the microbiology in your soil. It is mostly recommended for the first year after switching from conventional tillage to no-till regenerative agriculture. It will quicken the return of beneficial fungi and bacteria that tillage destroys. I...

    Walmart Chestnuts

Wisconsin Walmarts just received their chestnut deliveries last night. I went to the Appleton store first thing this morning. The 7 gallon trees were already gone, but had about 20 of the 3 gallons left. They looked pretty rough. Lots of black in the leaves and dry soil. I passed on them. Drove...

    Check your Chestnuts

Planted 3 Dunstons last spring. Last one's my nearest store had, kind of looked like they fell off the pallet while unloading. All are looking good now, with the strongest of the 3 showing catkins. Hopefully next year another will join the party so I can get a couple of nuts from them.

    Chestnut trees at Home Depot

There are no late season Dunstons at the walmarts around here. They sell out the day they come in. Last year called one store on their delivery day and someone bought all 35 of them. The next store had just 3 left a couple hours after delivery. They held them for me. Kind of rough looking trees...

    Poison ivy

Planted some spruce last Tuesday, Thursday the rash started showing up. Never saw anything, but wasn't looking for it as I didn't know we had any. Not positive it is poison ivy, oak, or sumac, but don't know what else it would be. Guessing I touched a root in one of the holes. Didn't know about...

    Deformed Graft

TC, that's nice to know about Redfree as I'm grafting a couple to B118 today. I'll graft them low and bury the union. Any other varieties do that regularly?

    Bulidng soil/step #1

You didn't mention what size the area is? If it's small enough haul your grass clippings, leaves, wood chips, or any other organic matter you can come up with and dump it off there. Another thing I would do once you've got some organic matter there is buy about 5 dozen earthworms. They'll make...

What's your biggest mistake/regret with land management?

My regrets are from long before I even had my property. Wasted my college years and about the next 15 years afterwards with too much partying and bad financial choices. That was before I was bitten by the hunting and habitat bugs. Took some serious work just to get credit scores good enough to...

One Thousand Chestnut Trees - a Whitetail Deer Project

We had a couple lows right at 32 the past week, then got way down to 26 last night. Haven't had any new leaves on them for a few weeks now. I'll check out leaf thickness tomorrow, but I know the trunk and branches have already darkened up from their new growth green color. Sent from my...
