Own your Own Whitetail land, but also go on guided, out of state hunts?

I joined a lease for a farm in Illinois about ten years ago and went two years in a row. It was a good time and we saw some great deer but I don't have the desire to go anywhere else to hunt whitetails. Now heading out west is a different story. I love going to Colorado every year elk hunting...

    Elk Hunt

Awesome hunt! There is nothing like hunting out west IMO. Countdown has already begun for Sept 2020...

Anyone else just not into it this year?

I'm definitely not into it like I used to be. Going out west each year has taken the wind out of my sails for deer back home. I do enjoy taking my son hunting but he & I both have learned to like duck hunting more than deer hunting over the last couple of years. Between elk out west and ducks at...

    Other hunting trips planned???

No, we were in the NW corner of the state. They were definitely behind schedule while we were there opening week and the heat didn't help either. We heard more bugling in the afternoons than the mornings and some groups of cows did not have a bull with them yet which is pretty unusual. The count...

    Other hunting trips planned???

That's wild. We hunted 8-31 through 9-4 and heard bugling everyday despite record heat where it was nearly 90* each day. I talked to my buddy the other day and he told me they really got going good last week with the cooler weather and temps in the 20's at night.

    Crossbow Blow UP!

Tell the guy welcome to the club. The same thing happened to me earlier this month while on an elk hunt in CO. I was walking back to the truck after the morning hunt when I heard my crossbow make a weird noise. I had never heard it make a sound before but I didn't pay much attention and kept on...

Departing for Idaho archery elk in a few days

Nice! Congrats! The hot weather impacted us too in CO.

    Other hunting trips planned???

Headed to CO in the morning for opening week of archery elk season. There is nothing like it.

Departing for Idaho archery elk in a few days

Good luck! I'm headed to CO Friday morning. It's my most favorite week of the year.

When to throw in the towel?

I would let it go and focus on hunting my family land. Take the money and time you had in the lease and go on a hunt somewhere you've always wanted to go like a mule deer or elk hunt out west. I am in a similar situation (on a much smaller scale) and find myself being the only person in the...

    Gobbling

Gator, this seems to be the common theme where I hunt in Va as well. Birds gobble well some days in the trees and maybe a couple of times right after they hit the ground. I am not sure if it has something to do with coyotes or not but they certainly do not gobble like they used to. Twenty years...

    Rage Hyperdermic +P for elk

Holy smokes! I know it looked like a very nice bull but that is enormous. Your pics here do it no justice. That's a bull of a lifetime! Congrats!

    Rage Hyperdermic +P for elk

Nice bull! I am frankly surprised that it was a lethal hit and had enough penetration with that hit high and forward. The Slick Tricks certainly did their job. Elk hunting is very addictive and by far most favorite animal to hunt. And to hunt them in the beautiful Rockies is a great bonus too. I...

    Rage Hyperdermic +P for elk

Tough luck not finding the bull Bullwinkle but I bet you had a great time. Can't wait to hear the details and see some pictures.

    Rage Hyperdermic +P for elk

This has been just the opposite of my experience. My shots have been 7 yds, 25 yds & 30 yds. And all with little or no wind. We hunt opening week and focus almost exclusively on hunting water holes/wallows. I have literally had elk almost step on me and almost touched noses with a bull a couple...
