I hear you on the rain this spring! Ive been needing to get my tractor out to the plots and woods but hasnt stopped in weeks! Yesterday we finally had a nice sunny day so out I went, and even in the normally solid spots, my tractor was sinking in to the point I decided not to tempt fate and left...

Its always a tug of war with me between habitat, leaving the wood there or hinging or firewood for the larger stuff. We heat with wood all winter so cutting down big trees and leaving them there, and then turning around and paying to have a load of logs delivered for firewood seems blasphemous...

Thank you George. Fire isnt used very commonly around here. Not sure why since its so useful elsewhere. I had actually thought about that for the leaf litter etc.

Well so far our winter snow has been non existent so if that holds, as soon as our season is over next week I will go out and start.

Im going to be doing alot of edge feathering around my plots after deer season closes, or closer to spring depending on our winter. Is there a way to speed up the thickening after the cut? I dont want it to be so bare for so long that deer abandon my area. Some smaller maples I plan to try...

As we head into winter, I was wondering if there is a time that is better than another to do some cutting to get the most stump sprout regeneration on things like maple etc? Years ago before I got into habitat things, we had some maples cleared at our old house and I remember them sprouting...

Do deer like that purple vetch? I have tons growing as weeds in flower beds, never thought to try to establish in/near the plots for deer!

Sorry, another early question: You say within 2 weeks of Labor Day the cycle starts again. Im assuming you mean just broadcasting the cereal grains (rye) as the clover is already there.

I note that you say this process works best in zone 6. I live further north in zone 4/4a. I have no problems growing rye so that would be fine. Wondering what tweaks you might make further north or are there any?

Love this thread. Im going to try it on one of my small plots this year. If I can get it going well I will do the other next year. Ive tried to follow Sturgis' no till method and it just doesnt seem to take well. Looking forward to all the follow ups on here.
