Seed at my local hardware is bare. I was able to pickup 8 oz of green beans. Not sure if that’s enough to do much but I can add it to a buckwheat, pearl millet, and oat mix in a few weeks. Maybe I can score some other seeds by then
Cedar ridge,
You crimson plot looks great! In another week or so, it’ll explode with color. I did a half acre plot a few years ago and it was beautiful. I transitioned that plot to red clover but still get crimson volunteers each year
I have two clover plots about 3/4 acres each. Both were seeded last fall with winter rye and winter wheat. Both seem to be doing pretty good with a little bit of grass and weeds. I will mow the plot after the clover seeds set and drop and try to knock down the broadleaf weeds then spray the...
It’s expensive but sunn hemp is another good companion with buckwheat and does good on marginal soil too. Iron clay cow peas is another companion option also
Agree with others. Sunflowers and buckwheat go good together but you’ll likely never see any sunflower mature. I’m planting a half acre of buckwheat in a few weeks. I’m gonna plant sunflowers on a portion of the edges of the plot and plan to net around them hoping they make it. My sunflower...
Buckwheat recommendation here too. Gly, come back two weeks later and gly again concentrating on missed and stubborn spots. Wait a couple hours after seeding and mow or pull a drag harrow and you should be good to go, weather dependent
My mountain plots soil is like yours. Rocky and sandy for the most part. Pasture land on the lower part of the farm is really good soil. So far, the no plow looks like it will serve its purpose and hopefully allow me to seed oats this fall.
I can get a four wheeler to it and can use my drag harrow. I may go with white tail Institute no plow. I tried that in a similar newish plot two weeks ago and it’s germinating really good. That mix has about 25% rye grass that I don’t like but the rape and clovers will hopefully feed some deer...
I have a bag of oats and barley. I guess if I add red clover and get a decent germination, maybe the clover will get established enough to keep the weeds at bay after the barley and oats die in a few months. Then I can overseed wheat or rye late summer
I’m gonna establish a new plot in the few weeks and need some suggestions.
The plot is not accessible with a tractor so no discing. It’s mountain land surrounded by laurel on three sides and faces north. Tree density isn’t high and no mature trees in the projected plot area but mature oaks will...
