    Which tree tube

I have had mixed results using tubes with shrub type plants. I have had my best success with chokecherries and wild plums. My primary reason for using with shrubs is marking location and getting them started with quick growth above my grass. The deer in my area are heavy browser so protection...

    Butternut/white walnut

great to know! They are pretty rare in MN, so I would love to see a few grow. Any memory on how your grandfather got the seeds started: direct seed or started in pots or garden and then transplanted?

    White oaks dropping early...

Interesting, because we are so wet in MN. I have water standing every where even on high ground, and the acorns are falling fast. I thought that the oaks might not like their feet wet and were dropping because they were stressed. So much water its drowning out my 3-4 year oak seedlings.

    Butternut/white walnut

Has anyone had any luck growing Butternut/white walnut? I have a buddy with a beautiful Butternut tree, and I love to add diversity to my property. I pick up a bag of the nuts that are dropping, and drove the nut into the ground with the heel of my boot and flagged their locations. I might...

The Land of Milk and Honey

Agree 100% and always fun to see what that fire spot brings in the spring. I have a similar size pile on a buckthorn spot that I plan to light in the near future. Hoping it kills off some of the buckthorn and activates a seed base in the woods that likes fire.

So is it really buckthorn and, if not, what?

I have pulled and cut my share of buckthorn with surrounding oaks, and it does not seem to bother the oaks seedlings. Oaks have a deeper root system than buckthorn. I am headed up to my place tomorrow to attempt using a brush pile fire in a clump of buckthorn. Hoping fire with kill off the...

    Help Creating Bedding Cover

I dig it up all the time and transplant. I am attempting to break up an old hay field, and using for borders. I have wild plum, ninebark, chokecherry, dogwood, and the Speckled Elder has taken so much better than the others by leaps and bounds. I have 2 year old transplanted Speckler Elder...

    Help Creating Bedding Cover

Another poster on the QDMA blog that had a place within an hour of my hunting land; he offered me the opportunity to come dig a few clumps of the Speckled Adler. That was 4-5 years ago. I'd be happy to cut a couple of twigs for you and send your way if you are looking to try some MN Speckler...

    Help Creating Bedding Cover

I have a stand of 15 year white pines, and I had a similar scenario. There was a great discussion on the old QDMA blog about adding Speckled Adler for screening and bedding areas. I added the Speckled Adler to one my pine stands and it filled in the understory of my pines perfectly. It does...

U of Minnesota - developed a new apple

I thought some of the fruit tree enthusiast would enjoy this article out of this morning's StarTribune (Minneapolis MN) about the development of a new apple called the First Kiss. I cringed at the part of destroying fruit bearing trees that aren't "perfect". I'd love to hire a tree spade to...

    Releasing oaks from weeds

The part of i enjoyed about this discussion is the diversity of growing areas; what works great in one area may not in others. And there has been plenty of ideas I have taken and implemented at my place. I am one of the farthest north growing areas that I have noticed on here in zone 3 (Central...

    Throw N Mow thread...

I was back up north 3 weeks after "throw and mow" and I couldn't be happier with the results. I was nervous and anxiety driving up with not knowing what to expect. We received some rain August 3rd and 4th but no rain from the 4th until the 24th. As you can see I probably went a little heavy...

    Releasing oaks from weeds

Any concerns or issues with the bucks rubbing up those young oaks once the cage comes off? A 12' oak is still only 3-5" in diameter.

    Be Careful !!!!!

After the interaction with the Cooperhead, I don't have anything to complain about. I hit a ground wasp hive last weekend with the mower, and I thought it would have been a pretty funny observation watching me attempt to out run the wasps, but your 4 foot vertical leap would have been a sight...
