    A Few Random Crabapple Questions

Thanks Native, the water sprouts are inside the cage, so the deer cannot get to them. Also, what do you think of the possible leaf curl, am I being paranoid?

    The Massey

Set some cameras on my day off today. It was nice to have some actively growing plots to set them on! I was told by a buddy who hunts in western Kansas and has set cams on water holes for years, that even in a good year, the deer will typically hit a water tub, especially one in the shade...

    A Few Random Crabapple Questions

What do I need to do with these water shoots. This is the only one of 4 trees from North American Crabapple that does this. The pic doesn’t show it well, but there are probably 7 or 8 water shoots coming up around the tree. It has done this every year. Can I cut them now without hurting the...

    The Playground

When the trees in our north waterway finally get big enough to handle fire, I might give this a shot. It might be a while though, I think I’m addicted to planting trees. lol It would have to be the right year though, I’d want it to have at least a little regrowth before the first frost.

Yeah, fall fire does do a number on it, but who wants to torch all of the cover then???

Looks like you have to battle the dreaded sericea lespedeza too.

    First Year Blue Hill Applecrab

I'm confident there would be moisture within 16" right now. It can wait a while anyway, I was told by the neighbor that we got 1" last night! Good grief, it has been an incredible year so far!!

    First Year Blue Hill Applecrab

Does this tree look like it's in need of watering? I'm having a hard time deciding. With all the rain we've received, I haven't had to water anything yet this year, honestly, it hasn't even crossed my mind. The Massey got some rain last night too, but I'm not sure how much. Anyhow, nothing looks...

    Callery Pear Grafting

I took a pic of this last year Native and you thought it looked to be a callery, I'm hoping you're right. It is a wild looking little tree, it looks almost more like a very tall shrub than a tree. I'm wondering if it's been sprayed multiple times being within a 25' of the field edge, also, the...

    The Massey

Well, major fail at the Massey today -- I never retaped the supports at the base around the trunk, I can't believe I made this mistake. A year's worth of good growth down the drain. Other projects are looking better. The trees from the oak planting a couple years ago are looking good. These two...

    The great value of topworking

At least the callery trunk is still alive and well, so I’ll try again next spring.

    The great value of topworking

Well, I got a VERY unpleasant surprise at the Massey yesterday. I’m such an idiot; in all of my maintenance to stabilize the graft on my first callery pear attempt, I NEVER thought to reinforce the tape on the trunk. 👎👎👎 Please learn from my mistake, a year of growth down the drain...

    The Massey

I haven’t heard of that, but just did a little reading on it.
