YO CLETUS!

image.jpeg I will post a few of Cletus' tracks as we progress through the season. First a little about Cletus. Cletus is an18 months old std size wire haired Dachshund. A bit shorter backed and longer legged than the American version and much more athletic. His mother came from the Czech Republic and his father was born in New York originating from European stock. Those two dogs met in Utah and that is where we found Cletus In May of 2015.

Cletus had a great practice track today. The Hunter made a good shot, left the woods and called us-perfect! We arrived an hour later and couldn't find a drop of blood at the hit but Cletus picked a path and I went with him. At about 75 yds in still no blood, the hunter thought wrong direction and Cletus said "I got blood right here." There was steady blood down a steep creek bank and we waded across, up the other side and another 50 yds to deer. Just what Cletus needed and he let this little buck have it!
Notes: 1)there must have been some spatter or a different smell to this deer at the hit site as several were there and he picked up the right one. 2)overcome distractions: Hunter had his dog there, grass burrs/stickers like I've never seen. Twice we had to stop and get several out of each foot and each time Cletus went right back to work. Needed some dog boots like the old bird dog days! 3)deer was double lunged but from ground with no pass through. I think it took the first 75 yds for the chest cavity to fill and start bleeding. All in all a good day. Hope to track more this weekend.

Glad to see Cletus and you here "backnwhack" on these dog threads. I had rather read a great dog tracking story than watch outdoor TV shows. Most of them are protected land saved up for the TV crew or so it seems.

If I have learned anything - the dog's nose Knows!!!! Just ask drug smugglers. The deer's nose is powerful - it sure is nice to have dog power on our side.

Welcome. You and Brush are friends I gather.

Cletus must have some successful tracks to share with us.

Give us some tracking stories to follow. Please ;)

Sorry I haven't posted more. Cletus is having a great season. We have had days with 8-10 calls.
One of our best tracks was a call to the Red River bottom. I was avoiding anything down there til cold weather due to rattlesnakes but this call was in an area I had turkey hunted and knew it generally was not a snake area.
The track was 10hrs old, shot was just behind shoulder but steep angle. Very minimal blood, hunter had marked point of loss at about 100 yds. Head high very fragrant weeds had us all sneezing and Cletus struggled some til we cleared them. Then it was nasty tangles of locust thickets and greenbriars. Cletus lost the track where the buck circled but picked it back up and locked on leaving me with no doubt just trying to fight through and stay with him. At about 1000 yds I heard that yip that tells me we are close. We charged down an incline at a mud hole and the buck got up! Cletus was sure he could take him, lol but I held him back as the 8 pt stumbled trying to get away. He only made it another 20 yds and fell over for good. Turned out the shot was well placed but the angle only got one lung and the diaphragm. This was a happy hunter, proud handler, and Cletus got a good chew!

Cletus is having a great season.

A 1,000 yard track - I am very impressed. Thanks for sharing this recovery. ;)
