G, about the only really obvious wildlife value is that bees will collect pollen from the flowers and hummingbirds will use the flowers as well. I know for sure that it isn't a browse tree for deer. In fact, the leaves are toxic. I've heard of cases where the leaves got in a pond where cattle drunk and it killed the cows.
A neighbor gave me a 3 foot seedling of one of those trees over 20 years ago. I really didn't have any place in my yard to plant it, so I set it under the shade of a big beech, and figured it would die. That tree is still alive today, but has only grown to about 8 feet in that time frame.

Yep, if you do need a coffee substitute, you can always use chicory root. I drink tea myself and don't care for coffee, but I hear that chicory does okay in a pinch.

My uncle is trying to finish my new tower blind up at the creek bluff property this week, and my attention is now turning back to my other property. Some of the pics below have been posted in other threads but some are new.
My fall planted food plots are looking to suit me. You can't see the chicory really well yet in these pictures, but it is there and thriving. Also, the medium red clover is coming on nicely.
My fruit set this year is just incredible - apples, crabapples, pears, and everything else:
I direct seeded a bunch of chinkapins last fall. They are coming up great.
All of those hazelnut bushes I dug up and transplanted back in the winter are living and looking good.
Still too early to tell anything but these boys look like possibilities. Will be watching:

That's all folks. Next update should have our two deer heads from last fall.

Thanks Gator. You and G could have eaten a lot of that fruit this year if you had bought the property next to me. But, it's too late, because I saw a guy with Ohio tags pulling a trailer into the driveway.
Thanks Drycreek. It has been fun getting to the point I'm at now, and there is plenty more work to do.
Yes, but I get a manicure before going on stage. I also shave those nasty looking hairs.....

Thanks cutman. We believe he got killed somewhere else. Hard to believe he would just leave since he was such a homebody. We got a better deer that year but still would like to have taken him.

That’s a European Hazelnut. They get bigger than the native ones.

Looks like you’re about a month ahead of me, our apple trees still have flowers.
Do you ever burn your grasses? Seems like it would be more beneficial than mowing but I have no experience with that. I would certainly rather mow if I was dealing with as many acres as you’ve got going, I’d be too nervous

I looked at my earliest bearing apple tree today, and I predict it will have ripe apples in another week. Some of them looked ripe already.
I think burning NWSGs is a good thing where it can be done safely. However, I have never burned at my place for several reasons, and safety is one of the big reasons. I love NWSGs, but regardless of how you manage them, there is quite a bit of work involved. Right now it's worth it to me, but I could change my mind someday.
