Working at the Farm - Took a few I-Phone Pics

My jealousy does not stop with just the bucks you have but it extends to that green plot as well. It looks fantastic!

I failed yet again as a deer farmer as none of my brassicas grew.

CMT, I was blessed with rains at just the right time, so it made a lot of difference in the plots. We did have a drought, but I planted well before that time, and everything had set good roots. Now we are back into another rainy spell, starting tomorrow.

I don't feel like you failed, because none of us have control over the weather. Last year, we were so dry in the fall that my grains didn't even come up until the following spring.

Best wishes on your hunting this year, and I hope the plotting works out better for you in the future.

Awesome pics and awesome deer Native. That picture 1/3 is about as fine a deer photograph as I've seen. Everything comes together nicely in it. It's surely a good reason for those bursts of three pictures at a trigger as you have it set at. The picture of the firewood with the young guy standing there that cut it is a treasure as well.

CMT-You did not fail at all, you've learned something and you will only have failed if you give up trying and learning.

Thanks Dave. Yes, that picture with the red sky blew my mind. Too bad the camera changed to black and white when the deer walked up closer. And yes, I need to frame the picture of the young guy!

I have a question to ask you about your wild apple trees and will send you a PM.

Always a joy to catch up on your thread! Place always looks amazing. Nice bucks roaming around. And the pic of your dad is priceless. What a joy it must be to still spend time with your dad in the outdoors.

No need to fight boys. There is more food than you can eat and more women than you can handle.

The buck on the left is the 4 year old I let walk during our early 2 day ML season this year. My neighbor killed him with a bow last Tuesday. Oh well - mama said they would be days like this........ But truly I am happy for him. He is a good guy.

We never have very many mature bucks to hunt, but this year is low indeed - unless we have a visitor pop in to the doe factory. That is very possible and has happened before. Our gun season starts Saturday. Son and I will be out as many days as we can but lacking a little excitement not having at least one mature resident like we normally do.

Best hunting wishes to everyone.

Well our rifle season ended today. My son and I had some quality time again this year, but we didn't pull the trigger on a single deer. He hunted until Tuesday morning, and I continued to hunt off and on after that on days that my job would allow it.

On our best evening we saw 19 different deer, including the 3 year old in the picture shown just above, as well as some other really nice young bucks. I know the one above was still alive Friday afternoon, because I had him come by about 30 minutes before dark.

We still have a ML season in December, and I may hunt some then if time allows. In years past, my cameras show that is the best time here for the bigger deer, although I usually don't hunt it, because we will already have all the deer we want. So, since we didn't shoot anything this time, I may be back out then. Hopefully Duncan MacLeoud or one like him will show up. He would be 7 this year. He spent quite a bit of time here last year in December as a 6 year old, so it's possible.

A big congratulations to all you guys that harvested deer and/or enjoyed quality time in the woods this year.

It is crazy how different are our hunting seasons! I know you enjoyed time afield with son. Good luck during next ML season. Is KY limit one buck by any means? Or can you take a rifle buck and a ml buck?

Lak, it is just one buck statewide regardless of the zone or hunting method. You buy a tag and can take two deer. One can be antlered, but the other has to be antlerless, or they both can be antlerless. In my Zone (3) you can buy another tag and take two more deer, but not more than one antlered total out of the four deer you are allowed to kill..

We still have some deer meat left over from last year, so even if I don't shoot a buck in December, I likely won't shoot a doe, unless my son says we need more meat then. This was a low year for us in terms of mature bucks showing up. Sometimes we have as many as four deer 4 years old or older, but this time there was only one. I could have killed him in early ML season but wanted to leave him so son and I would have a good one to hunt together later. He visited the neighbor and got whacked before we had the chance...LOL.

We got hit by EHD in my area Native. Did you find any? We found four does, but I’m sure there were more we didn’t find.

Good luck in the late ML if you get out!

HB, to the best of my knowledge we didn't have it here. However, when I was over near Corbin working recently, one of the boys there said that lots of dead deer had been found in that area.

Thanks, and good luck to you if you do any more hunting this year.

^^^^^ Awesome. You always have some horses and they are always such camera hogs. Hows the state road building going and did it affect your hunting any?

dogghr, the road building is going on hot and heavy. The bulldozer noise doesn't bother me that much, but that dang blasting has just about taken a toll on my nerves. I've found rocks in my yard (and even on my roof) half the size of a piece of Texas Toast, so it pays to take cover late in the afternoon about quitting time when they start the fireworks.

Actually, it doesn't affect my hunting, because my farm is located 20 minutes away. But, this was perhaps the lowest year for mature deer that we have experienced there. We see cycles up and down, and I think the cycle bottomed out this time. But, as you know, my greatest joy comes from being the best steward I can of the small piece of earth that has been entrusted to me, and down years just tend to make me want to work harder.

On a brighter note, I have now built a good relationship with one neighbor, and he has bought into letting them grow old. We share pics and other information. Actually, he told me about another pretty young deer this year that lived on his place before the deer showed up at my place during the rut. He had never seen the young ones on my place, and I hadn't seen the one he told me about until the rut. Below is a picture of that deer. We both passed the deer this year, but I don't know yet if it is still alive.

Thanks for checking in my friend. I always enjoy your posts and your love for those beautiful mountains where you live!!!

Throwing some junk at an early age, he could grow up to be famous.

I shared pictures with my neighbor too and those deer ended up with pellets in their heads. I hope that you have a better neighbor than the one I had.

I know what you mean G, a guy can get burned by befriending and trusting the wrong person. So far my vibes are good with this guy, but a little caution can be good too.

I would wish you a White Christmas, but that's probably a given where you live, so I will wish you a Merry Christmas to go with it!!

Thanks Steve and Merry Christmas to you.

Early on I was baiting the criminals with pictures hoping that my conservation officer would catch them, which in hind sight was a big fat mistake.

It has not been a typical winter start here it is still in the upper forties till a cool down Thursday with a spot of snow but mostly sunshine called for in the 10 day forecast. Last year there was about 3 foot of snow on the ground, this there has been one tiny dusting.

Hey Steve I wanted to show you my Christmas present that came on Saturday. I took it and about sixty rounds on my morning walk yesterday. 60 rounds don't last long. I may have been watching too many cougar stalking videos. I'm going to make some plastic holsters.

Looks like a lot of fun G. Try 600 instead of 60 next time.
