Will these apple trees survive?

Not to rain on your parade but you are not out of the woods yet. You will need those buds to fully open before you know for sure. I have had trees try to open then just shrivel up and die.

Another update...one tree has some blooms popping out! This one might make it after all. The other has yet to pop but there are buds forming on the ends of the branches so I will continue to monitor.

Deff wouldn't let that thing continue flowering, if its going to have any chance. Anyone have ideas to get upward growth cuz those 2 side branches aren't going to accomplish much......?

Looks like the branch coming towards us could be staked upright into the new leader, though it will have a bit of dog leg. I would cut the stub off the top if that is the case. There is enough energy stored in the wood to get that growth, time will tell once the leaves pop if it can sustain itself.

The other tree still has tiny buds that aren't quite open yet. The inside of the tree is still green so there might be a little hope but I'm not expecting much at this point.

Sweet! Smart to prune it back like you did. The other tree the same variety? I have a wickson that has been way slow for buds to break compared to everything else. Not sure what’s up with it.

I believe it's the Enterprise that is slow to open.

So trying to decide what to do here. The larger apple tree, that is doing much better than the small one, has now set fruit. As much as it would be cool to have a couple apples the first year, I'm wondering if that's not best for the tree as a whole?

Pinch them off and go buy some apples at the store! That leafs more energy for the trees to become established - pun intended.

Pinched the few apples off during that last weekend in May. The large tree is definitely doing good and the small one just might make it after all. It's starting to leaf out now.

You're right. I didn't cage them initially because I wasn't even sure if they'd survive at all. Might be time to put some wiring around them now.
