Just a couple quick pics of the backyard "Rock Plot"...clover and WR grain.

Last 2 days I have been off hunting our deer lease. Been hoping to get a chance at a 7 year old buck we have been calling "Big 7". I have played hide and seek with this buck the past 3 years with our closest "miss" being when I "freshened" a scrape last November at 11:15 am when I was headed back to camp and that evening when I went back in saw he was standing in the scrape 10 minutes after I freshened it...

I awoke to 39 degrees and a SE wind. I had 3 stand options for this wind.

I had been getting some photos of him in almost every area I hunt on the lease and there is this area near our internal road that he has been on camera a few times at night. It is easy to get to and with the right wind is a foolproof setup but I have never killed a big deer there but my wife has. Being the way I am I think everything needs to be hard when it comes to deer hunting so I dismissed this spot.

The next spot on my list I am saving until our muzzleloader season as it can be a 60 yard shot at the most and I have a perfect stand there that sits in between a tree with 3 trunks. It's a great spot and I have high hopes for it...pop straight up the side of a super steep incline and right into the tree stand SE wind blows right out over the big hollow I climbed up out of and no deer ever come from there so getting winded isn't going to happen and with the multi trunk tree being seen isn't likely to happen either.

The next spot on my list is midway up the north end of the mountain I normally hunt and is where many of the bigger deer I have taken down there have come from and is where all my scrape pics come from. Have to climb the mountain and it's about 3/4 mile to my spot. Haven't hunted this spot yet this year. Shots tend to be short because of the travel corridor they utilize but I can also see a good distance from this stand.

I decided to go to this last spot I described...settled in 30 minutes before I could start making things out. First 3 deer came by at 8:15 am. 2 does and a fawn right down the path I expected. 10:30 am another doe and fawn came along and then at 11:15 3 more does walked by. I decided to call it at noon and got down...

On the way back to camp I stopped by the trail cam near the stand close to the road (about 200 yards off road but open woods) and I grabbed the card and went back to camp and shut it down and came home...a few minutes ago I decided to check the card...

"Big 7" is getting a new name..."Lucky 7"... going to have to learn it doesn't all have to be hard when it comes to getting to your stand...

Congrats on the promotion! I'm sure it's well deserved.
Great to see those plots looking green. Rain has been inconsistent here and my plots are still pretty barren.

Thanks cat...I am looking forward to the new challenges...

All together in 3 small rains we have had about 2" total since August 16th...the soil up here on the hollow is very good at holding moisture unlike our place at home 10... plots between the 2 are night and day different...

BTW if you need a few oz's of clearcast for that smart weed let me know. I picked up a gallon for my clover/alfalfa/chicory plots.

Your welcome,

Beans at elevator prices if he grows them next year. Only need 4oz or so of clearcast an acre at just over 2./oz off ebay. Not much money.

Thought I would do a little update. I am on the last week of my old job and looking forward to a few days of deer hunting before my new job starts. Next week is muzzleloader season and everything is lining up to be one of our best ever with the timing of daytime deer movement.

Here are a few photos of a pine screen I planted between the neighbors and our place down at "home 25" 4 years in...this was all wide open when I started and a clear line of sight. Pleased...

A few photos of our South plot here on the hollow from yesterday evenings sit. Plot was planted 8/17/17 but drought kept it barely alive and a timely overseeding and Urea application before decent rain helped save the grains portion...brassicas are all from the initial planting...

Didn't you mention that you wanted to plant soybeans in that plot next year? How many acres is it? I'm curious to see how they would do, because I think I have a similar deer density.

Yes, I certainly want to try soybeans next year as an experiment. I have a low deer density so I think I will be able to stay ahead of them. I am working with between 2.5 and 3 acres I believe...it will probably be 2 acres of beans...gotta leave some clover :)

Okie...Had to go back a few pages to catch up on your thread. Miss a few weeks and miss all kind of news. Congrats on the promotion!!! Like other's have said, work ethic is a beautiful thing and always brings good fortune. Your plots look fantastic compared to the last time I was on here. Rain is a beautiful thing. Nice bucks roaming around to boot! Always enjoy catching up on your thread.

That's a beautiful plot Okie.

G

Thanks G...I worried about it enough when we wer dry/dry but once a little rain started it just shot up there! I had a doe with a big old radish green hanging from her mouth a couple evenings ago but too far for my cell to get a good picture. Deer are really turning onto it right now since acorn drop has been going on for 1.5 months and most all of the acorns are on the ground...deer starting to want something green again...
Dang, you have gone from brown to lush green quickly. Congratulations on great looking plots. All you needed was rain.
Most everyone on this forum can have great looking plots if they either have enough or not too much rain. I am just glad I planted the day after the spigot turned off back in mid August so those brassicas could put roots down because if I had waited on rains to return we would have no radishes because the frost is upon us and a lot of folks only planted within the past 2 weeks...thanks for the kind words...

Thank you 3C...pretty sad these last few days at work. Boxing stuff up and folks dropping in to wish me the best. I truly love my job and I have been around enough of my new job to know I can make a difference there as well with the skill set I have now. Drove my old hot rod to work today, co-workers taking me to lunch, cake and muzzleloader season beginning Saturday to the coldest day of the year so far and should be a frosty start to an amped up deer herd by recent observations...stay tuned!
