What is this ?

I noticed this on one of my apple trees a couple of years ago but as far as I could tell it didn’t cause any damage. This fall I’m seeing it on several trees - Apple and pears. Any idea what this is?
It’s soft and you can flake it off pretty easy. Appears to be a fungus is some type of insect egg mass. Thanks.

I have no idea do you spray at all? If not I would at least do a dormant oil/copper spray late this winter prior to bud break and see if it clears it up for you.

I typically do not spray but I am going to make a stronger effort this next year and the dormant oil + copper tank-mix is on my list. If you or someone has a bare bones spray program for the South let me know what you would recommend at a minimum. Thanks.

We don't typically worry about perfect apples so I spray with copper and dormant oil at least once late winter/early spring twice of I see something like scab etc.

As far as pesticide we use liquid seven however this will thin your fruit. As far as timing I just go by the label on the bottle.

Thanks for the info Neahawg. Could you give me some specifics on what Copper and Oil products you use along with rates and water volumes?
From the reading I’ve done there appears to be several products and wide range of use rates. Thanks again.

I'll have to look when I get home but typically I just use whatever brand tractor supply happens to have. If you have a large amount of trees you may be able to get it in bulk. I can't remember the exact amount but they tell you how much to add per so many gallons on the label.
