Weekend project

Last week I had the chance to visit a friend from Montgomery. His dad passed about 5 years ago. This is a tree I sent him shortly after. His dad loved white oaks. Maybe one day we can kill a deer under it.

I got my trees covered for winter. These are a mix of buck chestnut from wildlife group, grafted apples and oaks.

I built some candy boards for my bees to have some extra food for the winter. They are eating them up pretty quick, I may have to add refills.

Bees are still bringing in pollen. It’s 12/11, wonder what has pollen?

LLC, im into year 2 so learning as I go. Some of my Wisconsin bee friends build these for feed insurance over winter. The recipe consist of 16lbs sugar mixed with 3 cups of water and 1 table spoon vinegar.

It’s easier to split up the mix. I did it for 5 hives and my busiest hive has devoured the sugar. I think because there were more bees in the hive. Directions are to drill a hole in one end for extra winter entrance if small bottom entrance gets clogged with dead bees. Also hole is drilled for moisture to escape. Here are some pics. I also tried dry sugar and that worked.

This is my first year jumping into the honey. Last year a friend put two hives on me and let nature take its course. They both died.

I’m doing everything I can to help them get threw winter and be ready for nectar flow. I did mite strips, beetle traps vented hive so it’s not full of water and ice and fed sugar water as much as possible.

I’m not sure if the candy boards will help but it will give them food to survive. I will keep ya posted.

Today I took the Jim Beam aged venison to the butcher. Aged at 23 days. With the wrap it allowed me to leave the skin on which typically I have to remove. It looks pretty good, stay tuned.
