They are predicting the driest fall and winter in recent history, after the driest summer in decades. How late do I need to water trees? I stopped watering during the drought of ‘12 in September and lost 90% of our fruit trees. I don’t want to make that mistake again. How late do I have to continue to water? So tired of this drought.
Once the leaves fall off and the temps cool down you will not need to water nearly as much. I’d probably start at once a week but plan on decreasing that frequency to every couple of weeks if able. I think a lot of people make a mistake by ignoring trees during the fall and winter. The tops may not grow during that time, but the roots continue to develop.
I’m watering once a week right now, just trying to keep ‘em kicking. This summer I was watering every 5 days.
It takes me 3 60 gal tanks to water the new ones this year.I did have 10 that were needing a drink pretty bad so I laid out some 1/2 inch drip line.I usually just lay out and poke a 1/4 inch barbed fitting at base of cage in line. Now I am watering 10 really good since there is a well drilled only 100 ft from these.
You should be fine staying with once a week. I would keep watering until the ground freezes. It won't hurt anything and people don't realize how dry it can get in the fall. Last year I watered well into November since it was so dry. Year 2 and they are on their own
I agree with watering into fall and winter. We usually have dry winters. I tend to only water a tree the first year but lately I've been watering last yrs trees too. I just planted 2 trees Sunday so now I'm really making sure I have to water this winter. Don't know why I do stuff like that!
The new dogwoods, right? Once it gets REAL cold, have you guys stopped watering by then? Even if only to pick it back up by very late winter?
I don't water when it's REAL COLD. But I will occasionally water all winter long if I think they need it. Yes sir, I planted two Kousa Dogwoods this week. Potted plants from the local nursery. I'm hopeful for good blooms right off the batt and maybe some fruit the first fall.
Ditto on watering mostly the 1st year but have been watering the last 2 years trees this Summer since it's been so hot & dry in VA!
This year, I’m watering trees planted 3 years ago. This is the first time I’ve had to do this. I waited until they looked stressed.
