Ugly Dog Farm-NC

Had put out over 250lbs of seed last week, 150lbs of rye,100lbs of oats & 10 lbs of green mix.

We got rain Saturday-Tuesday & this is what everything looked like this Friday.

Because we were unable to cut out our planned food plot lane, I decided to seed some areas of our firebreaks.

I need to come back & reseed some areas, looks like the rain washed across. The rye is doing well on the edges where I am dealing with grape vine..

You sure you arent taking pictures at my farm??? I could post some pictures that would make you double take. Clover and turnips has done very good on the shady side of my shooting lanes. Wheat and cereal grains not so much. You can see where they germinated but died off without enough sunlight and its a pretty distinct line of demarcation. Clover and turnips in same area are growing good. Im reseeding before next good rain on my bare spots and going with mix of red clover, turnips, and rye. Deer havent browsed my rye much but it stays green, almost guaranteed to germinate and limits weeds in spring.

Lol!!! Like I said awhile back, we are dealing with basically the same habitat.

The spreader on my atv definitely helps, those edges behind the sweet gums & grape vine covered brush is already sprouting very good.

UPDATE-

Nothing harvested yet this year, the LO wants to hold off the does & only shoot antlered bucks if possible. So far we have only had 3 sightings, the deer in the pic above which is a 2-3” spike & a 6” spike. Bears are moving in, I believe they are having an impact.

The rye & brassicas are being ate, you can see the rye I broadcast on a portion of fire lane above.

Have to say, it is a little discouraging not seeing the deer that we did 3-4 yrs ago & we are doing more habitat work. Going to get to work soon as seasons over with hinging & feathering as well as trying to create more bedding on the property.

There’s always next year, right?

Sightings are crazy at my place. Hard to pattern, but I know the pressure on public land affects them. Hope you get more movement as the weather gets colder.

Our sightings are down and we doubled our food plots. I haven't seen a doe the last 8 hunts. Even the trail cams have them all moving at night. Got lucky i guess with my bucks coming through right before dark chasing.

Yeah found out on Thanksgiving that a neighbor across the creek shot a nice 9pnt, I was actually hunting that evening & he was pretty close- maybe 2-300 yrds away. I heard 3 different shots Saturday evening from the same property, maybe time to break out the corn.

although it disappointing that he shot it and not you, that is a good sign that there are good deer nearby moving in the daylight.

I met my neighbor to the north for the first time since buying the property this past weekend. He was very excited and eager to meet us. He used to hunt the land we are own, but has kept his distance since we started hunting and maintaining the property. Extremely nice and even invited us on a dog hunt and offered his tracking dog. We are in the center of an large area where he has permission to run his dogs. Told them we would like to work out where he lets us know when hes running dogs, we let him retrieve dogs without guns or vehicles

That’s good- the neighbor to our east has the same goals we do. Not sure about our neighbors across the creek.

I have talked with the LO about reasonable expectations for the property, with a smaller property & trying to manage for older deer.

Took my assistant pastor out last Saturday morning- his first time ever stand hunting. We had 4or 5 turkeys come through & feed in the rye &brassicas.

We have the cover & water, I thought we had the food as well but starting to re evaluate my plans.I know if we burn a section or two that will help produce browse, I’m looking at ideas for bedding.

Season is over here in NC- 1 doe taken on Saturday evening by one of my cousins. Went out Monday morning for a last hunt & did a little walking around afterwards.

This creek bottom looks like a good stand location for next year:

Drops about 7ft from where I took the pic down to the stream/property line. Looks like a major travel corridor. Will be down in the next few weeks to start 2018 improvements, will try to take more pics for feedback.

Was out last week, snapped a few pics to give a little better insight into the property.

GE has updated sooner then expected: March 2018. You can see the firebreaks we put in last year, our neighbor to the south has really cleaned up on our side of the the pond. We have a couple new stand sites picked out, going to be interesting this year.

Summer peek into the areas we worked on in Jan/Feb.. looks like there’s still a few more trees to take down..Rye that was left standing has all been scalped.. not a single head remaining..

We had someone come out to finish some of the mulching I was unable to finish last year due to the issues with the rental machine.

Only had him out for 4hrs, LO was mainly wanting a fire break cut in for burning this winter.. did have him clean up & expand our main plot some..

Cut a new path by some oaks I’m excited about

Well got the call every hunter dreads.. LO told me someone has put in an offer on the property & his partner is wanting to sell or sell out his portion. I’m waiting on some numbers to see what I or the guys that hunt with me may be able to pull off, but not holding my breath. So very well maybe the last season here.

On a good note, this guy popped out on the trail in front of me Saturday. 1st buck in 4yrs & 1deer in 2. Going to try & fill the freezer while I have the opportunity this year.

Hey missed your post. Nice deer, feels good to put in the time to clear trails and plant plots that they use. Hate to hear about possibly losing your lease.

Thanks brother. It’s still all up in the air, good thing is they are not actively trying to sell, this was just an random offer. LO just told me this week to proceed with any small plans I had for next yr, which was mainly creating another bedding area & small TSI work.

This guy followed a doe out tonight, they were bedded in a small pine thicket beside the box stand. I am out of buck tags this year, 2 of my largest bucks ever 2 months apart.
