Got to imagine a late summer burn, as trees are starting to pull sugars, etc. into their roots to keep them alive over winter, would be very effective at killing unwanted hardwood saplings. I know if you burn a fire under green leaves and cook them suckers that tree is not long for this world so can only imagine interrupting the cycle of nutrient storage would work even better. Think I'll try a late August, early September burn to see. Plus, all fawns and bird nests should be done by then.

Just can't imagine an August/September burn. Got a message into our consulting forester for his thoughts. Always had good success killing hardwood competition in pines when the sweet gums were leafed out to about mouse ear size leaves.

Thx farmhunter! That water hole was put in about 6 weeks ago with a great clay base. It's at full pool now.

No, it would have to read" Dogleg north segment of the south end plot western section" the way you guys name them. Place looks really green for this time of year for you guys Triple. And nice bachelor herd.

Not much has changed at the Triple C since last posting. Plots were sprayed and planted. Just waiting on rain from Michael to give a good boost. Not but so many ways to show the same food plots over and over again so I'll save you the time of looking at the same upper lower, lower lower, bean field, hour glass, horse shoe plots until they are all greened up with new growth of grains and brassica. Clover is on life support with no rain and 90 plus degree days for past 6 weeks or so.
Biggest news at the Triple C is Brooks, yes Brooks got married this past weekend. Didn't think this 40 year old bachelor was ever going to pull the trigger. But...the right one came along about 3 years ago and we're thrilled that she is now part of the family.
Only habitat related pic I'll post is this cool shot of mother nature's work at controlling a few insects. Must be a natural flyway for insects as many spiders find this spot to be prime in their perfect insect net.
Been way to hot to hunt. Highs in the mid 90s when they should be in the mid to upper 70s. More to come as cooler temps arrive and we actually begin to hunt. Happy trails to all...

Thx for the comments guys. As for the elk hunt...Brooks got on a nice bull the 2nd morning out but couldn't seal the deal. I think this was his 10th or 11th year doing this hunt and only 2 bulls to show for it. But...he'll be back at it same time next year.
dogghr...I actually thought of you when I ran across the spider webs at this particular location on the farm and snapped the pic I thought to myself..."dogghr would like this". Interesting enough, this spot was a small beaver pond when I purchased the property. The 1st afternoon we visited the property in December 2010, wood ducks got up out of this hole. I think about that each time I travel by this spot. The beavers have now moved on and this little hole is full of all manner of growth.
As for the wedding....it was perfect. Lovely venue that happened to be his bride's parents home. Thrilled for Brooks to start a new journey in his life and believe he found the perfect soul mate.
We have a great forecast for rain this week. Got a half inch yesterday and expecting up to 3 or more inches on Thursday. Temps will be dropping down in the low 50s and we have a couple of really nice bucks we're targeting this year. With the incredibly warm temps we haven't done a single sit this year but that's about to change. I'll post up more pics when plots green up and deer are in them.
