Tree pullers

I was able to spend some time today on a buddies place working on his CTL using his Danuser Intimidator to clear some brush/trees. I was pretty impressed with how well it removed the trees. My question is, how much of the root system do you have to remove to avoid any root sprouting from residual roots left behind? Some of the trees we pulled would have 3-4 feet of the roots come with the tree, others maybe only the root ball followed by 1-2 ft of roots.
I'm sure it depends on the tree. I'm just thinking about the removal of my locust trees and elms

I bet every locust you pull comes back fighting mad unless treated with tordon,Hook a sprayer with wand mounted on bucket hooked to your horn switch if on a skid steer

That’s what I was afraid of. I sprayed quite a few last year and many are dead now, they have been pretty easy to knock over with the FEL. I was hoping I could get rid of the smaller elms with the Intimidator
