Tractor purchase help

Well I guess I'm all in now. I'm looking at my first tractor purchase and could use some guidance on one I'm currently considering. I have about 3 acres in plots and won't be using this to mow since I have a pull behind mower with my 4-wheeler.

The tractor is a 20hp 1982 Bolens with 1600 hrs. Its a diesel and comes with a tiller and front blade. He's asking $4,500.

My question is if the price is right and will this be enough for my needs. I probably can get it for less but want to know if the asking price is in the ballpark.
Thanks

Congrats on getting serious with planting your plots, hopefully your first tractor lasts a while... The price seems right in the ballpark, it'd have either a Mitsubishi or Iseki diesel engine, there's still parts available for them. Do all the lights, gauges and gears work? Does it have any visible oil leaks or old oil on the housings? Starts right up when you crank it? Does it smoke when it's just sitting there running at a low idle? A little smoke when you rev it is ok with diesels, but not a cloud, especially not blue colored smoke. If the seller pressure washed the block just recently that's a sign that he's trying to hide oil leaks. Before you buy a piece of equipment you should always ask yourself; who will fix this if it needs repaired? If you have a mechanic already you should ask his advice, maybe he'd even go look at the tractor and give you an expert opinion. One method to use to decide if the price is right is view all the tractors for sale for $4500 at places like craigslist and tractorhouse, then ask yourself if you see one that seems to be a better deal.

Mennoniteman....thanks for your input. You are right, it does have an Iseki engine. I haven't seen it yet but I will tomorrow evening and the info you provided will help in deciding if its in good shape or not. I'll come back with questions I'm sure.
Thanks

ps...I'm in Indianapolis but the property is down south near Madison Indiana
