Three unknowns.

I have three that I don't recognize. Just showed up the last few years.

First one stands from 5 to 6 feet tall with yellow blossoms. Where the leaves meet the stems is a puddle of water.

Second one stands from 4 to 5 feet tall. It's not a bush. I have seen it along an old railroad right of way and heard its name but can't remember it. Reminds me of an octopus.

Third one is a bush.

I would appreciate some help.

2nd one...Pokeweed for sure. My deer go nuts for it. Some guys say their deer won't touch it.
I encourage it here.

The third one might be that darn prickly ash-if the berries split open with a black seed falling out, it might be p.a. Also should be thorny.

#3 looks like the prickly ash I saw yesterday. If it is, nuke it, burn it, dig it up, chop it down. It's terrible stuff.

Thanks - Rusty

I thank everyone for the ID replies. #1 I'll let grow. Cup plant is pretty and doesn't seem invasive. #2 I haven't decided what to do with yet. I've read birds like it but it is poisonous to mammals. #3 is on my hit list with Bush honeysuckle, hops tree, staghorn sumac, and multifloral rose.

I highly doubt that poke weed is poisonous to deer. I've seen herds, including where I live, eat the crap out of the stuff. They love it and show no signs of being sick from eating it.

Is stag horn sumac on your "eliminate" list??
It's one of my more desirable trees. I've never found a patch of it that isn't loaded with buck rubs. When I scout a new property and I see sumac, it's the 1st place I'll look for buck sign. It's one of the most used scent marking species out there.
Are you sure that you aren't mistaking tree of heaven for sumac?

1 - agree with you. Cup Plant is nice to have around. It has nice flowers and makes good cover. Leaves may even be browsed when young.

2 - Deer eat pokeweed with no ill affects. Highly browsed in some areas but not in mine.

3 - Yes, I felt like it was probably Prickly Ash, but I an not one to make guesses on blurry pictures that don't show the things you need to know to make a positive ID. Too many ways to go wrong, and I don't like being wrong when its not necessary. Why guess when you don't have to........ Do what it takes to get a positive ID.

Best wishes....

I actually love prickly ash. Deer use it on my mn property as a winter food and since it grows on my field edge it discourages trespassers and lookeelews from going in my woods. Good stuff.
