Things That Last Forever

1978 Stihl 042. Just went up for sale today though. Parts are hard to find and time for a newer one. Couldnt find another one of these for sale in the midwest!

snowracerh...That saw still looks great! Believe I’d remove all oil n fuel and create a display resting place for that ol workhorse n manual.

Well if we want to see how far back...here you go. Hand me down from my dad that he wore in the early. 60s. My early bow hunts were this and pair of wool army surplus pants that were made to fit someone 50# more than me. It’s been dry cleaned and hung in protection to preserve for who knows? Don’t remember ever caring and don’t remember deer ever caring. Cool stories from everyone. Sorry you are so young j-bird!

You’d have looked mighty fine in that jacket on wedding day :D
We need to see that relic back in action next fall with an old recurve in hand. That’s a keeper!

I've got a very old STIHL that looks a lot like that one but not quite as nice. Is there a serial number or something I can look up to get all the stats on it (year, model, etc)? I would like to know more about mine...

There should be somewhere on the case but not sure where. The newer ones have then near the muffler. If look there or maybe on the bottom

Now that I think about it I think I should clean this thing up, repaint it back to original, and make a display out of it. It has sentimental meaning to me... it was given to me by a neighbor who was in his 80's (it was a saw he had used most of his life... he was dear to me.), and I used it clear forest for the powerlines going to our house build on our land. It could make a neat display in the basement!

Post a picture!

No pic of the saw (until I get home tonight) but here is a pic of the basement. Most of the wood you see was cut down with the saw in question, including the 3.5" thick counter tops on the bar.

I see a future chainsaw display on that wall!

Do NOT re-paint it. The wear and tear it has seen is what makes it so cool. Nobody cares what it looks like brand new! The memories are in it's use. You can clean it up some, but let those scars of time show and be proud of them!

Just the way it is...I'll be old someday....I hope! Now Snow just posted a pic of a chainsaw almost as old as I am ...that's impressive.

I have some guns, coins (pre 1900 silver dollars that came from a grandfather) and fishing lures (wooden) older than me, but those are typical collectible type things...so that's not really fair. The proudest thing I have is the first gun I ever shot, shot my first squirrel with that gun...it was old then. It was my grandfathers Stevens 22/410...(old enough it doesn't have serial numbers). It was destroyed in a fire and nothing was left but the receiver and grossly curled and twisted barrels. I wish I had pics of the damage... I had it restored...it is inoperable now (firing pin ground down) for safety reasons...but it's a shared piece of family history and one I am proud of. The man who did the work for me...I owe a kidney! Sorry got sort of off track...

I wouldn't paint it. That wear is honest, like an old 30-30.

dogghr...You started a jewel with this thread! Wonder where Native Hunter is gonna mount his DR Brush Mower if that thing ever gives up the ghost? Speaking of things that last forever...Native - what's the story on that old red tractor that is hoisting the deer in a recent pic you posted?

As for the coat, I started take pic with it on me, but my chest is now around my belt buckle these days so pretty sure that would be and impossible button job.
As for Natives DR, pretty sure it will outlast him and he will be the one mounted on the wall getting faded and dusty, a relic of our days. J-bird may just be young enough to inherit it hopefully. . :)

I'm open to ideas! I'm giving it thought, but not sure I like what I've gotten in mind yet...
Get a large stump and strip the bark off it and seal it. Set that bad boy right on top or put a notch in the stump and put that bar into it. Then add photos from over the years if you have any to the stump....maybe a little blurb about your history with the saw. Don't put it in some lame clear case....that thing was and is a serious work tool - display it like one! Or set/hang it from those exposed beams of yours... Be creative. Maybe even add an shed antler to the display to tie in that connection. Needs a beat to #$%@ pair of leather gloves as well!

Here it sits, she's going to take quite a bit of cleaning.

Jbird, those exposed beams wont be there forever.

I'm thinking of putting up another tree like the one on the corner of the bar, but by the steps instead and using the saw as a handrail.

Looks like an 041. Late 60s - early 70s. Its definetly paid for itself!
