The Playground

Looks great! All the bucks using our place have shed except 1...
Thanks. I walked all of my food plots and a bunch of trails before checking the card in the camera. Didn't find any, which is not unusual with my ability to find sheds!:D

I suppose it is a good sign they are all still packing antlers. With the winter we have had there hasn't been much stress other than a decent cold snap or two.

I've enjoyed catching up on your thread. I was just getting started on it when the last forum shut down. Glad to hear you have other species benefitting from your work! Always a good day when you bust up more quail than rabbits!!

Congrats - it worked!
Congrats to the young man, My daughter turns 8 this year and has shot the 22 and hits pie plate every time at 50 yds, but she is scared of the 243. Havent pushed her, but the itch to shoot one herself will outweight that fear eventually. I like seeing other people talk about eating the heart. Favorite cut for me and when possible shooting does, like neck shot to preserve heart and occasionally liver.

Get a sims vibration recoil pad,a slip on and you can move to other guns.I also had a daughter that went with her uncle and he wasn't watching and she got scoped and then she was scared.I traded for a long eye relief scope and she got over it with that

Its mental, she has shot the .410 multiple times, but the bigger size gun worries her, even though i tell her the kick is the same. I have a crossbow so may start letting her shoot that some and see how she likes it.

dogdoc's daughter shoots from a shooting house with a lead sled type rifle rest and is using a 25-06 so she gets 0 recoil and with good hearing protection makes it enjoyable for her...might this be an option for you?

I have 2 4x4 box blinds but both of them have deer coming from all directions, not really a good setup for a kid. May have to build a new stand with this in mind. Doc, when you practiced with your daughter, what type of standard did you have before she could shoot at a live animal?

I have a buddy ladder stand that I bow hunt from along the creek, it will probably offer the closest shot, but doesn't have a lot of cover. How easy is it for an 8 year old, to shoot a crossbow from a ladder stand? (never shot crossbow at a deer, just in the yard)

Crossbow or gun the main thing is to have a rest...my grandson killed his first deer at 7 years of age and has taken 1 every year since and all but 1 from the same stand which is a double ladder with a rail. He shoots a .223 single shot H & R but his earliest 2 deer were with my AR-15...He is graduating to a 30-30 this fall...

I am going to be putting up a buddy stand with a rail around it for this fall. He always wants to shoot out of a tree but the amount of gear we have to take now I have him in ground blinds. On his deer last year we used a rest from primos that mounts on a standard camera tripod. Doesn't do anything for recoil but makes aiming easier.

The big tree I left partially cut came down sometime. Should redirect movement to my new highway.

Twisted a little but should be plenty to stay alive for a few years.

The Massey took her first pass through the timber road. Complained a little but made it through.

Very dry up there. A lot of guys are burning but I'd like a little moisture to make it easier to control. Might not get a good window before green up? Mowed up some firebreaks just in case.

My trailcam said that the bucks had started shedding around the end of Feb. But I didn't find any. Took this on the way into the property this morning. The cam is now switched to field scan mode to watch the turkeys.

Pretty happy with the pictures the new Bushnell takes. Got at least one good one that made it. Still holding antlers on 2/18.

Few turkeys coming through. Set up the blind for the kid. Of coarse he wanted it right where he shot his deer. Best spot on the place in his eyes!

We still have a little competition.

First cat I've got pics of in a couple of years.

Times are incorrect. Cat pic is 4 am.

Luv pics of cats. I'm sure they do just as much damage to turkey nests and fawns as yotes but for some reason I don't mind seeing a bob cat on our place.

I agree. I figure they have just as much right to eat a few deer and turkeys as I do. Probably eat a few nest predators so for turkeys and quail I bet it is a net gain. Not to mention all the rodents that eat the trees I plant. I was more excited with the cat picture than the 300 deer pictures.

That is a busy spot. Everything walks by that small tree. Hope it gets one pellet from a turkey shot. Good luck

The kids luck in the pretty food plot continues. He only had one spot he wanted to set the blind, the exact same place he killed his first deer last fall. We didn't hear much after sun up. I was chatting back and forth with a couple of hens for 15 or 20 minutes just trying to get a turkey in the plot for him to see. All of the sudden a gobble sounded off 10 yards from the side of the blind. Hit the mouth call and he would double and triple gobble. Took me another 10 minutes or so to get him in front of the blind. The kid was about to have a break down. Finally I took my hand off the trigger guard and told him to go ahead and kill him at about 15 yards. A little turkey fever but on the second shot he rolled. We while walking up I told him I thought it was a pretty big bird. We get up there and it is a double bearded 24 pounder. Main beard was thick and just over 11". Probably the best turkey hunt I have ever been on!

Ever tried to pack out a bird half your weight?
He didn't make it very far!

Sis had to get in a pic. She was pretty proud of big brother.

Got a little work done. Most of WP's chestnuts are in the ground. I have some in rootmakers in the garage.

My new favorite planting tool = $15 at home depot well spent.

Pear trees were full of bees, hopefully the cold snap this week didn't hurt them.

Some of my grafts may continue to turn Bartletts into Ayers or Kieffers.

I really wanted to light something on fire but 25-30 mph wind and no crew, probably not a good idea.

Before last week rains it was getting pretty dry. Both ponds are hitting the overflows.

Thanks for looking. Good to get a weekend in the woods to reset.

We used one of Hank Shaw's recipes to make turkey carnitas out of the boys turkey's legs. Cooked in the crockpot for 6 hours. Made a pretty good meal.

Today we tried making Brats out of rabbit and pork. 2 pound rabbit 4 pounds pork = 30 brats. I whittled my stuffer spout for the grinder down enough it would fit on the jerk gun. Worked much better.

About half bacon and cheddar, half jalapeño and cheddar. Left one batch in the fridge to try tomorrow night.
